I hear the 2.7 is not good for enclosed option. Overheats hard with any significant weight. Way worse than the minor one the 1st Gen 3.5's have. Has its own set of problems as well. Great for an open though.

Option 2a: Buy Ecoboost. When your hear it slap trade that crap. I wouldn't actually be afraid of the issue. If you can't stomach a possible issue then buy a Tundra. I bet if you polled timing chain/phaser issue to amount sold it would be a small percentage of overall Ecoboost engines. Just like most complaints. They are always seen the most and blown up the most vs just regular people driving who don't have any issues seldom post they don't have the issue.

It will noise for awhile before it really gets out of timing and pops a cel. People driving with the noise 20-30k+ miles. Just will scratch up the internals eventually.

you guys act like i made this decision alone... this move to the woods was my wifes best opportunity to become a driver rehab specialist. Not only did she get certified but shes also now taking over to the whole program.

If i could have read the cards, I would have moved on the train line somewhere... we are looking to make that move "soon." but 7 (almost 8) years ago there wasn't nearly the amount of people out our way... its insane now. it made my commute much worse but it also means i'm not the only one and my house value is increasing.

now to find +40 acres in West Virginia... no i'm not moving back anywhere near the beltway. I don't like that lifestyle. I don't enjoy being stacked on top of one another. I don't enjoy the attitude people have walking down the isle of the grocery store. I grew up there and its turned into a disaster area.

I mean... i didn't matter where i lived, i sat in traffic on I66 or I95. traffic is traffic.  

when your grocery store parking lot has traffic... when its 1.5 miles away but still 20 minutes… when you say hello to your neighbors and they give you a dirty look... these things drive me crazy.

8 years total for $1100. 100% worth it. I kept my diesel for 8 years and it had 100k when I bought it. The raptor blows it all away; wouldn’t be surprised if I ran it into the ground with a C6Z in the corner for fun

super fresh update... last weekend i had to put front rotors and pads on the truck ... 107k-ish miles on the last set.

its not nice to fuel and tires... but basically i just turn the key and drive it all over without thinking about it. purchased at 51k-ish miles and i just turned over 160k miles this weekend.

If Toyota could make me a slightly heavier duty version i'd be in line for a brandy new one.

prepping the metric mule for a 2200 mile round trip run for a new race car (i'm sure you'll see a post about that toward the end of August) 

Jason looks over the truck ... I asked him to do the 100k mile service early (or late... because maybe i need to do it every 50k)... everything looks pretty good... some minor oil weeping and the transfer case is a little damp-ish. 

the serpentine belt, antenna grommet, and radiator need to be replaced. wooohooo... the first "major" part needs a replacement. 



I'll probably be doing tires sometime just before inspection time... some E rated joints to help with towing. maybe i need to put some air bags on this thing for future plans... who knows.

The trip ended up being a little over 2400 miles to get the civic... and when i got within 10 miles of the house i heard some squeaking. At first i thought it was just the trailer and when i took the truck to the park and ride in the morning, it ended up being the truck.

knowing that the rear calipers had seen better days (the bleed screws were stuck) I went searching for new calipers. the "best" deal IMHO was the PowerStock units on rock auto... i used their ITR calipers on the integra for a while and they seemed to be a good deal and held up to tracking the car. So in complete ricer fashion, they come in red... and i cant have mismatched calipers ... SO i ordered front and rear power stock calipers... and raybestos rotors and pads (i like my ST43s, why not get their towing pad?!?!)

this truck can STOP now. the mid grade duralast stuff was fine... but holy crap these new raybestos pads STOP. i'm sure it helps that all my calipers are brand new... but still. very impressed.

I'm not sure how to explain this... when i purchased this truck many moons ago... the "average" lifetime MPG was 15.3... I reset it and i was getting 15.2 with a lot of towing mixed in.

I did a tire change and it seemed to go down to 14.8ish after that.... then in the "rush" to build the #civicofdoom and get it all dialed in (alignment, 2 dyno tunes, etc) AND then covid life (i only drove it towing it seemed like)... I got down to 14.2 MPG.

Jason did the service on the truck before the run to Louisiana ... and we got the good old 14.8 MPG towing most of the way there and all the way back. I had Jason do all the calipers (the rear bleeder screws were stuck), pads, rotors, and a flush... I drive home, park... drive to the airport for work... drive home... drive to the dump... i'm now up to 16.9 mph without resetting the meter.

i can only assume the calipers were dragging and maybe the Amsoil fluids are helping things get a little more slick? Im on the same crappy (and very used) Goodyears.
