So, I don't plan on dropping money on an amp or subs any time soon, but my stock head unit is leaving a lot to be desired.
I see that this is on sale and the reviews seem good. I'm not a huge audiophile so I'm looking for stellar sound. Just a tad of improvement.

What do you guys think? I can justify grabbing it since it's on sale, looks like a good value, and I've been working my butt of recently.
I had a Kenwood in my green 325i and liked it quite a bit. SQ was good and the interface was intuitive, which is more than a lot of HU manufacturers can claim. Mine required a Kenwood-branded iPod cable to function, not sure if this one will or not. It was only $20 and Best Buy had it in stock, but was an additional cost and frustration during the install. Once I sorted it out though, it was great. The Bluetooth SQ was much better than the JVC I had prior.
Make sure you can change the illumination of the buttons to match your dash lights. Nothing bugs me more than someone with a really nice head unit, with red buttons on a green-lit dash.

Meh, I don't really care for Kenwood very much. I have had several and they have been ok but I am more of a Pioneer/Alpine sort of guy. I just put a few year old Pioneer Avic nav in my Ram and I really like that sucker. $325 with nav and built in bluetooth on ebay.

+1, my experiences match that. I have had my Pioneer Avic Z2 since 2007 and would not get rid of it for anything. Actually spending the $100 and sending in the ECU to get all the new maps/software hacks and updates and increasing the hard drive capacity and speed with a new hard drive.

I switched to Kenwood in my Accord and it was wonderful! I didn't need amps/sub/speakers after the new head unit and I was pleased. Mine only costed like $30 so if you're not pleased with this I'd be very surprised. However I can't see any specs of the one you're trying to pick up. The e36 came with some HD Radio JVC thing and it sucks, i hate it. I can't emphasize how right Jake is about making sure the color matches the rest of your car. This JVC is always rotating all the colors of the fucking rainbow while spelling me out a bedtime story. Most distracting thing at night.

Oh, if you do decide you want subs and an amp cheap I have a 12in MTX and a 600w pioneer amp I am tired of looking at. Plus I probably also have most of what you need to install all of it and your headunit it in my stash.

I'd be happy to help you install the stuff. The Pio amp I have is a two channel so you could run it stereo for rear mounted speakers if that is what you want. I'm talking like $40 for it seriously. If you want the sub you wouls have to wire it up differently from the PA speakers, no real way to use the same amp for both.
