In the overwhelming majority of tasings it hurts like a mofo but it doesn't cause permanent damage. There is a higher chance of an accidental death but I have no idea what percentage of tasings result in death. I have to think the chances are less than 1%.

FYI, tasers do not work by pain compliance. They send an electrical current through your body tightening up your muscles making you unable to move. It just so happens that it hurts when you do that as well (or so I hear...) This is why it is effective over a regular stun gun because sometimes criminals will be whacked out on some drug and not able to feel the upper thresholds of pain.
