What are the differences between assault, aggravated assault, and malicious wounding?

There needs to be intent to kill or just intent to harm?

Assault, quite simply, is an attempted battery. Battery is an application of force that results in offensive touching or bodily injury. Thus the two are often paired together as one offense.
I don't think there's aggravated assault in Va, but in those areas with such a law, it's usually assault with a deadly weapon, or with intent to maim, etc.

Malicious wounding: maliciously shoot, stab, or wound another with the intent to maim, disable, disfigure or kill.
In VA you can also be convicted of the lesser crime of unlawful wounding if the above is true, but there's no proof that it was done maliciously.

Aggravated malicious wounding: same as above, but the act is "aggravated" if the victim is severely injured and is caused to suffer permanent and significant physical impairment.

Well, common law homicide has four possible states of mind: intent to kill, intent to inflict great bodily injury, reckless indifference to an unjustifiably high risk to human life (often called "abandoned and malignant heart"), or intent to commit a felony (that's the type committed while committing some other felony)

That'll be tree-fiddy, please.
