They'd likely just get a bigger bonus because the IT staff is busier.
Maybe IBM just made a better sales pitch. Maybe they offered better warranty support. Or hummers. Who knows... if the employees are happy with them, then who gives a shit? Execs get a bonus because the company has to spend more money on IT staff? I dont think so.
This is a pretty pointless discussion at this stage, but anyway
It all comes down to dollars. Always. Different companies look at dollars differently (long term, short term, etc) but its the same. A big company doesnt make a several million dollar decision on a whim or a blowjob. My company doesnt give a shit about if im happy with my laptop if it costs them another $500 over the course of the laptops life. Ive been involved in procurement for clients so Ive seen the volume pricing and support deals from most of the manufacturers. IBM is pretty expensive, Dell isnt. Take that for what you will, but my guess is that if a company picks IBM, they feel pretty strongly that the extra cost is worth it. Ill leave it at that, and we can all form our own opinions from here, as this horse is on its last breath.

However Dell's standard line in my experience have been flaming piles of shit.
And dont get me started on Sony...
so wahts wrong with sony laptops? i like how small the vaio line is and i might need to get a laptop sometime in the next 6 months if i start grad school.
all of this discussion reminds me of a tradeshow i went to two years ago that sells police equipment of all types. one guy had this durable shell for laptops and other sensitive electronics equipment. he kept pitching about how durable it is to moisture and shock and stuff and demonstrated the product by dropping his laptop on the floor. when he picked it up, the screen was all jacked up and busted. it was hilarious

2004 Honda S2000
2007 BMW X3
I had a sony laptop when I was at Sapient for a year.
Much slower than it should have been, broke a few times. The IT guys hated them, and much preferred the HP/Compaqs that we had used before
sonys are craaaazy unreliable and their support is just as bad.

The IT guys couldnt even get parts for them
Hmm...I've been wondering why my computer was so hot. Leave it to me to be the person that has something catch on fire. Luckily, I have a big fire extinguisher right next to my bed!
hahaha... what I found on Dell's site about this crappy D620 screen:
WUXGA LCDs are the highest resolution panels available in the market today. These displays use an industry-standard process that applies a textured coating to the inside of the polarizer to reduce glare and improve light distribution. The WUXGA panel offers nearly twice as many pixels as a WXGA panel [1.3MPixels vs 2.4MPixels]. These pixels are much smaller and denser than on WXGA panels. The smaller size, higher density, and textured coating may cause the display to create a sparkling or blurry effect while using light-colored backgrounds or on a white background, such as word processing applications. This is typical of this technology and is needed to prevent glare and increase viewing angles.
Obviously it's a feature, not a bug! Silly me. I love this sucky sucky high res screen. It can't render a solid color to save its life. To simulate, cover your screen in dust and cut the brightness in half. Oh, mess with the color balance too, get the color temp all out of whack. Awesome!
I also just realized that after only 6 weeks of use, the keys I commonly use have already lost their texture. Now down to nice, shiny wear spots. That's a feature too I guess. :?
An exploding battery would help this thing out a lot.

For the first time, I'm pissed at Apple....always have been using their computers and probably always will but they are pissing me off.
I bought a new intel iMac a week before school started, and when I used it it was the best computer I've ever used, loved it...until the logic (mother) board failed....I unplugged the computer and simply plugged it back in cause I had to move it, and it all of a sudden wouldn't turn on, it completely died.
Now its sitting in a certified repair shop and has been for weeks, waiting for a new logic board from Apple, they are taking forever to ship the part. Apparently there are several other iMacs in their shop with the same problems waiting for the same part....its probably a widespread problem, they just won't come out and say it (a la the iBook logic board failures). It happened to my brothers iBook recently, the rest of the computer is fine (even fired right up after sitting in a puddle of water over night when his dorm burned down).
Cliff notes: Apple logic boards = suck
yeah I've been a little leary of the Intel stuff, I'll be temped to get one though in another iteration once they've got the bugs worked out.
At least they're fixing it!

ask JohnC about his freezerBook.....
(that took an email straight to big steve blowjobs to get fixed)
Yeah, I mean their customer support is excellent and they do take care of you. I guess you should always wait a year or two for problems to be worked out but I really needed a new comp.
Oh and I bought the 17" version, the entire time knowing that right after I bought it Apple would come out with a better version for the same price....well just recently they downgraded the 17" version (lesser graphics, no DVD burning etc) and they offer the 20" version with all the options for about the same price I paid...BASTARDS. The 17" is big enough though so I'm not really worrying about it....I just knew it was going to happen though.
