The inner is what separates. It's essentially held on just by the boot clamp.

When I was swapping engines, I didn't lay in on the ground cause it kept getting in my way so it was laying on the front cross member with the inner joint hanging slightly off. Slightly off became completely off sometime during the night. It's not a big deal cause you get a chance to rebuild, clean, repack the joint but it's another hassle that you might not want.

So what exactly blew up? All the cyls look to be in the same orientation/direction (i.e. you dont have one piston cocked 45 deg and out of sync).
Looks like the head gasket let go?

cyl 3 had no compression. i think the ring gave out.
