axle nut from HELL! - christo - 04-22-2006
So the motor blew in my Si, luckily I have a replacement motor. Unluckily, I haven't been able to get my axle nut off for a week.
It's been WD40'd, PB blasted, Seafoam'd. It's seen maybe an hour of continuous impact gunning. I've devoted a lot of time to jumping up and down on the breaker bar with a couple extensions. Shit just won't budge. I lowered it back on the ground with wheels on and someone on the brakes, and I'm giving enough torque to still turn the wheels, but not the axle nut.
Help? RJ? God?

how long is the breaker bar with the extensions? That can be MUCH more than any impact gun.... I think I was at around 4 feet when I did the bearings on my Fiero. You could probably get 600-800 ftlbs out of that, I can't imagine anything would hold then.

upon further thought.... you're turning the WHEEL with it on the ground and someone on the brakes? That's unpossible! :?: Isn't it? I don't know how much force that all adds up to, but it's got to be a whole helluva lot.

Car is on jackstands, we should have broken the nut while the car was on the ground.. well it's still possible to put the car back on the ground..
The passenger side was exactly like the driver-side, but somehow luckily I got it off with a lot of cursing, jumping on the breaker bar, and thankfully the impact gun got it off... (cordless impact)

yeah just tried that today. the tires don't seem to get enough traction on my garage floor... or maybe it has something to do with that puddle of PB.
but yeah I'm using a pretty big bar and it was enough to move the car forward an inch with the ebrake up.

a cordless impact doesnt have the juice. You're going to need some air and a good (600+ ft lb) gun

If you are pulling the engine you dont need to take the axle out of the hub. Remove the shock fork, separate the lower balljoint and pop it out off the trans, let the axle hang on the LCA.

Works pretty good. But I'd try getting a real impact gun on it first, like a 1/2" Drive one.

the nutcracker thing won't work. 7/8" max. (22mm) the nut is a 32mm

I guess you dont have a service manual (Helms). Thats how they say to do it, and how i've always done it when removing the trans.

Nope, Navin and Christo just made things harder on themselves by not loosening the nut with the wheel on the ground.
Also when you do it the way RJ suggested, make sure you support the axle properly cause the joint could and can separate.

The outer joint wont separate on its own like that.
