I read that on Autoblog earlier. I wonder what sort of reliability issues that thing will have.
Two feet.
Hmm, I wanna say F1 cars of the turbocharged era had this but I'm not 100% sure. It might have only be variable area nozzles or something. Still, pretty cool for a production car.

"necessitated the creation of new heat-resistant materials to handle the hotness"
Like it says...not really a new concept. Glad to see it'll start hitting production cars soon.

Mom and Dad's Jetta have a turbo just like this. I believe a company in Britain called Aerocharger made them for gasoline vehicles in the 90's, Corky Bell talks about them in "the book", it's a very cool technology, but nothing revolutionary. Quick spool, no need for a wastegate, but I think historically there have been some reliability issues with the high-heat exhaust output of gasoline engines that have limited the wide-spread production of this type of turbocharger to diesel engines.

I wanna say maybe the MR2 turbo had some kind of variable turbine?
Or maybe that was just a divided exhaust housing. I'm too lazy to look it up.
