Variable turbo... wtf mate - JackoliciousLegs - 11-29-2005 <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000257069829/">http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000257069829/</a><!-- m --> - Andy - 11-29-2005 I read that on Autoblog earlier. I wonder what sort of reliability issues that thing will have. - G.Irish - 11-29-2005 Hmm, I wanna say F1 cars of the turbocharged era had this but I'm not 100% sure. It might have only be variable area nozzles or something. Still, pretty cool for a production car. - Evan - 11-29-2005 "necessitated the creation of new heat-resistant materials to handle the hotness" - KPWSerpiente - 11-29-2005 Like it says...not really a new concept. Glad to see it'll start hitting production cars soon. -T - CaptainHenreh - 11-29-2005 KPWSerpiente Wrote:Like it says...not really a new concept. Glad to see it'll start hitting production cars soon. Mom and Dad's Jetta have a turbo just like this. I believe a company in Britain called Aerocharger made them for gasoline vehicles in the 90's, Corky Bell talks about them in "the book", it's a very cool technology, but nothing revolutionary. Quick spool, no need for a wastegate, but I think historically there have been some reliability issues with the high-heat exhaust output of gasoline engines that have limited the wide-spread production of this type of turbocharger to diesel engines. - ViPER1313 - 11-29-2005 <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.xmission.com/~dempsey/shelby/sheldod9.htm">http://www.xmission.com/~dempsey/shelby/sheldod9.htm</a><!-- m --> - Evan - 11-29-2005 *confused* someone other than Jeff posting about a Dodge product?!! - ScottyB - 11-29-2005 Evan Wrote:*confused* beat me to it - CaptainHenreh - 11-29-2005 I wanna say maybe the MR2 turbo had some kind of variable turbine? Or maybe that was just a divided exhaust housing. I'm too lazy to look it up. - BLINGMW - 11-29-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Mom and Dad's Jetta have a turbo just like this. yeah, for some reason I thought a few companies were already using them... :dunno: ViPER1313 Wrote:http://www.xmission.com/~dempsey/shelby/sheldod9.htm but the shelby was not one of them. That was a variable NOZZLE setup, not variable vane. Other manufacturers have done similar, with some kind of adjustment for inlet opening size or shape. - Andy - 11-29-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:I wanna say maybe the MR2 turbo had some kind of variable turbine? The mr2 turbo didn't have variable turbine and I'm pretty sure it didn't have a divided exhaust housing. |
