Did someone say torque?

Hey all,

So I figured it was about that time to do a little write up on the "new" toy. It's a 2003 Z06 in EB with just under 80k miles with a laundry list of modifications. I was lucky enough to find the original owner who built the car and since then sold it to two other before I got my hands on it. The car was built and driven in autocross and HPDE at Sebring, then the next owner had it up at NJMP, and finally I acquired it from the owner who was a regular at Watkins Glenn and TMP. Interestingly enough the car did one lap of america a year ago and survived without issue.

The original Mod list from when I purchased the car:
  • Ported 243 heads - Refreshed under 15k miles ago.
  • • Professional Valve job
  • • New 2.04 intake valves
  • • New 1.60 exhaust valves
  • • New powdered metal guides
  • • New springs
  • • New pushrods
  • • Titanium retainers
  • FAST 90 Intake(Ported)
  • LS2 90mm Ported Throttle Body
  • Vararam Intake
  • .620/.589 235/238 112+4 Comp Cam
  • BTR dual valve springs
  • Trunnion Upgraded Rockers
  • Monster LT1*S Twin Disk Clutch in '15 (pedal feels stock)
  • Zero balanced clutch assembly and flywheel '15
  • New master cylinder in '15
  • Rebuilt Torque Tube while clutch was put in '15
  • New clutch slave cyl '17
  • Replaced 3/4/reverse synchros '17 (all others measured well within spec)
  • While in there the shift fork was replaced (common issue)
  • New Remote Clutch Bleeder '17 (extremely handy to keep clutch fluid fresh)
  • Fresh Transmission and Differential Oil (amsoil).
  • B&M Shifter
  • Delrin Shift knob
  • Stainless Brake lines
  • Wide band O2 sensor and gauge
  • Skid bar on radiator supports
  • Full exhaust with Modded Ti Mufflers (quiet while cruising yet loud when WOT, NO DRONE!!!)
  • Offroad X-Pipe
  • Hotchkis Sway bars front and rear
  • LG Quiet Adjustable End Links
  • 04 Z06 Shocks
  • Delrin ride height adjusters on front
  • Poly Control Arm Bushings (NO SQUEAKING)
  • Camber Plate kit - no more worries about alignment ever slipping. Easy to go from street to track settings.
  • New front hubs '17
  • Rebuilt EBCM '17 (common and expensive corvette issue- resolved permanently)
  • LMC5 column lock bypass module
  • 160* Thermostatic Custom Front mount oil cooler (good luck getting this car over 220* F oil, have block off plate for cold
  • months)
  • Dual Catch Can Setup
  • Wolfe Racecraft 4 Point Roll Bar
  • Rear tow hook
  • Custom front center mount hidden tow strap under plate cover
  • Trailer hitch for small autocross tire trailer
  • New clear/black corner lenses (stock ones crack)
  • Rear deck assist
  • Double Din Head unit CTD Door speakers
  • New AGM battery last month

Since then I have revised and fixed a lot of "less than satisfactory" modifications that were done to the car.

Newly Added Modifications:
  • Detailed inspections and basic maintenance, all new fluids, leak checks, etc.
  • Temperature controlled oil cooler block
  • Sparco Seats and Harnesses
  • Willwood 6 piston front and 4 piston rear calipers with c6 z06 rotors(these things are ridiculous)
  • Forgestar F14 18x11 square with 315/30/18 Falkens(package deal, I'll wear then out and get some better rubber)
  • Upgraded oil catch can with proper routing
  • Sam Strano front sway bar 1 5/16
  • Hyperco front race spring
  • Koni Yellow Shocks with delrin mounts
  • Rebuilt Differential with C6 z06 internals(clutches, pinion carrier, shafts)(RKT Performance)
  • Rebuilt Transmission with all upgraded internals(RKT Performance)
  • SKF X-Tracker Race Hubs w/ extended wheel studs

I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty but that's a decent start. I finally got around to where the car is ready to see some real track time and see what decides to try and break, so I am signed up for march madness at VIR. I already went through a complete autocross season to feel out the car but haven't been able to do any high speed testing. According to the previous owner the car pulls the same at 150 as it does at 70 so we shall see how that goes. I've linked the original build threads from the Sebring owner below if anyone is interested. The motor was built and spec'd by Jeremy Formato from FasterProms and is absolutely bonkers.

Hmm interesting, they come through fine on multiple desktops, but are very broken on mobile.

It had a 4-pt roll bar that I took out and sold(weight and the bar was a drag racing bar that had the shoulder bar at the completely wrong height for harness angles), and I put in a Brey Krause Harness bar. It has four points of attachment and is rock solid, the hardest part was mounting the lap and sub belt since the floor is balsa wood covered in fiberglass.

Fixed back seats, harnesses, and no roll bar [emoji27][emoji27][emoji27][emoji27]

We may have some things to say in the tech shed. Consider swapping stock seats back in for now, unless Corvettes have something special about them I'm not aware of.

Nearly all corvettes that run without rollbars have the same setup I do, I had Delta V do a full track inspection also and they checked the car off and I have the NASA form with approval stamp. The z06 halo bar is(from what I read) just as strong as a rollbar. The C5 structure basically has a rollbar built into it, there a big crossbar right behind the seats that ties driver side to passenger then the roof halo that crosses over.  The most dangerous part of the car is the windshield and it collapsing but nothing other than a full cage would reinforce that area.

I spent a lot of money on unnecessary parts on the camaro to find out later that the safer/better way was with another part that was slightly different. It's funny thinking back about how little research I did back then, but all about safety now and doing everything the right way now. Also why the leaky diff was pulled just to find a pile of metal sitting behind the axle seals, but hey a bullet proof transmission and differential are in now and should outlive my time with the car haha
