I’ve done a total of 20 minutes on a track and can say that was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen for the level he was in. That’s the equivalent of pulling onto the shoulder to pass someone in NOVA traffic, which I’ve seen many times..

Skip to 9:00.  So Matt Farah who does the One Take series shot a video of the Civic Type-R out at Gridlife in Atlanta.  In this little sequence he passed three cars without a point by, which were in the process of passing another car.  So, if you were head instructor or race director what would your call be here?

What if its an advanced group, ie. no point by's?  

Never liked his videos and all that, but nothing seemed super sketchy other than the split pass. I haven't driven Road ATL so can't speak for how wide that straight away section is. If it's an open passing group, then it is what it is... I'd hope everyone has enough experience in that type of group to recognize what is going on and react accordingly.

Every other car, him included (in the end) was giving point bys and the speed they were going kind of makes it seem like a lower group. I mean there was a viper and an e46 pretty close behind him that couldn't catch/pass him. Makes it seem like a lower group.

I'm not sure if the other things I mentioned were sketchy or not. I was kind of asking but his commentary(which could have been for the sole factor of entertainment with no actual follow through) makes it sound like he'd happily make it sketchy if he doesn't get what he wants. Ie: stay ahead of the E46 and pass the WRX before that turn.

Based on the Reddit thread, it was an intermediate group that required point bys to pass. His attitude was "if I had to wait, my video would have been ruined" which is not acceptable imo.

If you're such a "baller" and have to get another million view YT video made, why not rent the track out completely for an hour or two instead of trying to film when people are on the track learning how to race?

Side note but I have zero sympathy for Youtubers and the plights of their careers. I was having this conversation with a friend of mine the other night who has been building up his Youtube base and was complaining about the big media companies coming in and changing the ways that "the small guys" are making their living on Youtube. There are people who have been riding the system for years making a couple hundred grand off of stupid ass videos people watch on a website. You had to know that bubble was going to pop eventually.

Side note but I have zero sympathy for Youtubers and the plights of their careers.  I was having this conversation with a friend of mine the other night who has been building up his Youtube base and was complaining about the big media companies coming in and changing the ways that "the small guys" are making their living on Youtube.  There are people who have been riding the system for years making a couple hundred grand off of stupid ass videos people watch on a website.  You had to know that bubble was going to pop eventually.

Except they're not making a couple hundred grand, at least, not a year, off of youtube.

I'm indifferent on Matt Farrah, but he did do a really interesting podcast interview about how he got started and how he's been able to turn what he does into a business.  tl;dr, each youtube video might net a few thousand bucks, with his massive audience now.  He has to hustle 8 other ways to really make it work but the youtube vids give him the audience for it.

There are plenty of YouTube stars making 6 figures. Plenty of live streamers making the same or more. I made decent money back in 2008-2011when I had my Justin TV channel and that was before the formalized ad revenue system.( I got an invite to the beta of that right before I stopped) Quite a few people I know from those days quit their jobs and do that full time. It's not just the ad revenue. You'd be surprised at how many bored rich guys are on the internet willing to donate for no reason. I had one guy donate me money to buy a Wii and some other stuff, gave me money for Christmas, Etc.

I don't think he makes all the money directly from ads, but it's all indirectly related to the YouTube videos.

Wrong, the top ones do and make a LOT more than that.  PewDiePie clears over $9M-$12M a year:

Granted a lot of the top Youtubers pick up side hustles that stem from their fame but do the math on the amount they get per thousand views and you can see it's been a ridiculous run for a lot of these people just on ad revenue alone from YT

Yep exactly, you are seeing a lot of that coming from the video gaming space as more and more people are watching gaming / streamers online.  Many of them are migrating off of the YT platform to places like Twitch and Patreon because of the declining ad revenue for people who aren't big corps.

I met a guy the other day that had a friend that worked in the corporate world as a developer or something and then started a streamer channel for some PC game like League of Legends or one of the other ones.  He clears like $380k now with ad revenue and donations from random people

Yup. I quit because of having a job, slow internet, and going to college, but I'm certain I would be making multiple times more money than I do now if I stick with it. Probably the biggest "what if" I'll have for the rest of my life.

That's also a rough life to live entertaining people every day at terrible hours. It's really turned into pathetic pandering for most people nowadays to get followers and subscribers. It's a lot more aggressive of a space than it used to be and I'm not sure if I would have stuck with it. Plus the people that you interact with are not the kind most people would enjoy. There is more awkward drama there than anywhere. I was one the top 20 or so broadcasters on JTV (now twitch) back in the day. Maybe I'd be a millionaire now :/

Wow that's really cool!  I mean who would have known you know, it's so hard to predict those emerging popular trends...because eventually the gravy train does go away.

My buddy was saying aside from declining ad revenue for the smaller players, there's also a lot more pressure (I believe financial) on them to produce more videos every week...something like 3 or 4.  That's really difficult considering the amount of hours that goes into thinking up, creating and editing the content.  A number of Youtubers actually hired staff when they became big to help out, now they're having a hard time figuring out how they're going to pay them in the future

I'm honored to have derailed this thread so well. From RJ prompting us, to Lee with the counter point, and who could forget Scotty with the quality gifs. Many more made this possible, but my time for this speech is short. Yeah I generally like Matt Farah alot actually and I remember watching that a week or so again and thought "wtf". Normally he'd admit to being wrong or giving disclaimers about what's safe or not so I'm surprised he's just blowing it off and giving excuses.
