So,
I sold the R6 and the SV650 (and the FRS....
)after moving to Boston and thinking I was going to be up there for awhile. Things didn't work out, so I'm back in the 'burg without a motorcycle.
I'm a little interested in trying some mild touring and the VFR800 always seemed like an interesting choice. A buddy of mine is selling a red 2004 with only 6k on the clock for a decent price... but I hear the VTEC (yo!) can be a little wonky on the early generation six's.
Any thoughts on the bike? I've never ridden one. The center stand, single sided swing arm and decent-ish ergo's is what attracts me to it.

At first, I was thinking "Who the hell is this guy?" Then I realized it was the man of 1000 names.
They're great bikes - but, dont really add anything over the earlier non-vtec 800cc models, so given the choice I'd take the earlier bike.

I had a 5th gen (2001) and loved it, once I replaced/refurbished almost the entire electrical system. Replaced the rectifier/regulator, stator, and went through a couple of batteries.
I would *like* to own a 25th anniversary 6th gen at some point.
My two feet.

Aren't the earlier bikes carb'd? FI is a must.

Agreed, I really like the body work. I actually saw one a few years ago at the local honda dealership. They're out there.

They DO add something: A stupid maintenance procedure.
Get a non-vtec. Also, how much is your goddam tax return, bruh?

Valve adjustments are a bitch and when the vtec kicks in (yo) I heard it can be pretty jarring. All good considerations. I'm not sure how comfortable I am getting a gen 5 considering the newest will be 15 years old now... Idk. more research is required. I have awhile 'til I'm itching to ride again.
In regards to tax return: I sold two bikes and a car all for a profit. (Most)of my tax return is going into my investments 8-)

So, ended up test riding a vfr800 that was in decent shape. Surprisingly uncomfortable for being a whole "sport-touring" thing. The bike has clipons! Come on, you can't say comfort and clipons in the same sentence. Ended up getting a cb900, or 919, or hornet, which is much more in line with my tastes. Nice riding position, motor pulls like an arrow shot from God's own bow and I love the naked styling. Also, since its the same motor they used in the fireblades and the oil filter is easy to get too, I can probably keep it running for a little while.
