Project: 1973 CB750 - Kaan - 10-26-2007

Some of you know that I purchased ChapinÔÇÖs CB750. Basically the plans are to turn it into a daily ridden caf├® racer. So here are the plansÔǪ IÔÇÖll keep this post up to date as much as I can. ItÔÇÖs been ÔÇ£slowÔÇØ going, lack of motivation, money to get it to the next step, etc. have all held me back a little.

This is how the bike sits now. Well the front forks and triple trees are removed, but its bascially how it sits. The only thing left to remove is the center stand. I was going to strip the frame by hand and just paint it. Unfortunately, itÔÇÖs a pain in the ass to do! So I am milling over the option of sending to get sandblasted and powder coated.

The plan is to have a high gloss black frame, outer rim, head and engine block, bars, and bar end mirrors. The tank, tail section, and engine covers will be British Racing Green. IÔÇÖve flip flopped on the color other than black about 20 times now. So when it is all said and done, it might not be BRG!

Much like RJÔÇÖs project, IÔÇÖll be running the wider 16 inch rear wheel. IÔÇÖll be running (if I can find them) CB900F shocks like RJ as well. The bike will have non adjustable clubman bars, probably cut down.

The normal gauges will be used, but IÔÇÖll be making a custom mount for the GPS unit that I will use basically as a primary speedometer. Depending on the electrical output, and the ability to run LEDs as much as possible, IÔÇÖd like the bike to power the GPS unit and not have to use batteries.

I may continue to strip the frame in certain areas by hand, so I can weld in gussets. The CB750 frame is notorious for being flexible. With the idea of running modern sport bike tires and the possibility of a motor upgrade, I would like to stiffen it up a little.

After I get back everything from various sources to powder coat (thanks Rex) the next object is to break down the three seized motors I have, buy new bearings and rings, a heavy duty cam chain and tensioner, and get a motor spinning freely, and running. The rest of the motor parts will be held in reserve for next winters project. Either a new CB750 to build or a meaner motor to install in this CB750.

There are lots of little things to think about. IÔÇÖm going to go to a duel front brake set up, so I need a ÔÇ£modernÔÇØ front brake master cylinder. I also need to figure out what type of rear sets to run, and how to mount them. So far the plan has been to buy RC51 parts off eBay as I find them. From searching the ends of the internets, I have found all the lights I would like to use. So I just need to pinch my pennies and start picking up parts here and there.

The biggest purchase is going to be the ignition system. I dont want points Ive heard countless stories of them being a disaster. So Im switching to Dyna coils and ignition system. Its a $360 purchase, by far the most expensive item I need to buy.

I have countless parts in boxes, most of which I wonÔÇÖt use. So once the ball is rolling a little faster IÔÇÖll be selling of pieces I know IÔÇÖll never use on any CB project. Hopefully that helps with funding the things like lights, coil systems, and some of the powder coating costs.

Just do it - not worth your time to strip the thing down yourself.

- Kaan - 10-26-2007

Well i need to at least strip it in certain areas to add the gussets. Wink I need to look at your bike which is more "put together" and see where things can be added and what size.

- Kaan - 10-26-2007

I forgot to add the part where, I'll most likely be building my own exhaust system for the bike. I'll be using the stock pipe from the head down, merging them in to a 4 to 1 collector, and then either going under tail or a short single pipe off to the side.

MM Oakton - where miatas and motorcycles go to die (Ôäó)

- Kaan - 10-26-2007

FU... my FZR still runs! AND the CB is going to run... i'm not going to let it die. i just have to get the damn CRX to pass emissions... but it runs too!

- .RJ - 10-26-2007

The FZR fouls plugs every other gas fill up. The CRX or the 4 runner cant be driven.... yeah, might as well open a junkyard Wink

- Kaan - 10-26-2007

It fouls plugs ever 3-4 oil changes... give me a break!

I told myself i'd never buy another bike with carbs... and look at the project Wink carbs of death! i cant wait to start building ancient honda bombs in the garage!

the motorcycles are already dead when they get here.
at least the miatas stay outside.

because your car and other bike are not projects enough? this makes me sad.

- .RJ - 10-26-2007

like you work on your projects at light speed.... oh wait, mikey rules!

you dont read very well. the FZR runs fine... Its fired up at least the last 26 days... because its what i take to work and back, and to the store and back EVERY DAY.

and the CRX needs a cat and another shot at emissions... nothing "long term" there.

i have 1 project, which hasn't broken down on me in the 4 years i've owned it. the bike is not a project, it's a piece of shit that i need to put back together and sell.

- Maengelito - 10-27-2007

i'm still waiting for G's integra to get back out on track...

- Kaan - 10-27-2007

Motor #1: Valve cover off, head off, cylinders off...

It looks like cylinder 4 was seized at the rings. To free it up i fucked the pistons, but it wouldnt matter since the cylinders were so screwed that to use them they would have to get punched out. Smile

pics will be coming!

Was that the motor that was originally in the frame?

Yeah. We found your mystery oil. Smile

And some ATF.

And a ton of 30 year old motorcycle mung.

A big thanks to Rex and Julie for coming over and trashing with me. The VFR needs a build page too Wink
