Topping off the tank is bad why? - BLINGMW - 11-15-2016

I'm sure you've seen or heard the advice that you're supposed to stop filling when the pump clicks off and not squeeze in that extra half gallon. But I've been doing that for 20+ years in 20+ cars and I've never had a problem.
But it causes damage to the evaporation system / charcoal canister, kills all the local wildlife and makes the engine run poorly!
.... Really? Are you sure? :dunno:

Why can't you just be done when it stops? I don't have an opinion either way but how much do you really need that half gallon?

Edit

I thought you weren't supposed to top off because too many idiots would over fill and gas would be everywhere. I've seen it happen.

Same reason I don't stop for gas until "miles remaining" is flashing and wife is yelling at me? Who knows. :dunno:

Same here Chan. I can get an extra 1.5 gallons in the F150, which in reality only works out to ~4% but hey! That's still somewhere between 4 and 25 miles depending on how much turbo whistle I want to hear. I imagine it varies by vehicle. If I'm filling the charcoal canister, somehow it's getting drained and used. I'll count that as an auxiliary tank! Otherwise, I do mess up sometimes and it comes spewing out of the filler. Whoops. Stinks on my shoes for the rest of the day - that'll teach me.

Of course you and Chan are the two people who do it and don't care Big Grin

Exactly why that extra .5-1.5 gallons isn't worth it.

I usually do it to get the price to be a cool number. Like if it's $26.15 when it clicks, I'll go to $26.26 or some other combination of numbers thats satisfies my ocd on that particular day.

Maybe I'm just lazy, but I just stop when the nozzle shuts off.

Unless I'm filling gas jugs for the track, in which case it's a constant battle between the fuel frothing up a little bit, getting the jug all the way full, and reenacting the gasoline fight scene from Zoolander.

For the same reasons you can't buy a normal goddam gas can.

It's really only applicable to the vapor recovery nozzles. Overfilling can cause it suck liquid fuel into the vapor recovery system. Has nothing to do with impact to the vehicle systems.

So yeah, overfill and baby pandas die.
