Depreciation is a bitch, as always... had no idea the later V8 5-series had gotten "cheap"

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - SlimKlim - 02-26-2013

I'm not a fan of the styling either but if it tickles your pickle that's all that matters, it is a pretty cool machine. I'd imagine the ///M would be much more demanding, I think that motor requires manual valve adjustments just like the E46 M3, and obviously brakes and suspension components are going to be astronomically high compared to something that isn't a 500hp battleship cruiser.

I know next-to-nothing about E60s because they're too new for me, but Lauren's e39 540i has been pretty reasonable. We picked it up around April of 2011 with 110k miles on it. We had the PS hoses (or High Pressure Oil Lines, can't remember) replaced by Mid-Atlantic before we picked it up for $400, then the passenger window regulator went out ($100), the ABS module failed (shop wanted $3k, I sent it out to get rebuilt with a lifetime warranty for $169), and the rear window regulator went out ($100) which I still have to replace. We also did a set of valve cover gaskets ($90) and im sure a few things I can't remember.

We also had to get a set of tires for it, which was ~$650 installed and she managed to assassinate her climate control unit face by leaving a closed can of seltzer water in it in the middle of summer, so we chocked up the $100 for the stupid replacement button kit and $25 to replace those dinky-ass cupholders, and $5 for a bicycle cupholder to shove under the console on the passenger floorboard for functional beverage holding.

The next thing we have coming up is the dreaded Valley Pan service, which will address her coolant leak and vacuum leak / rough idle issue on cold mornings, its $250 in parts and can be done in a Saturday. It also has a very faint "belly wobble" under braking, which is common with them because there's so much weight over the front end. All the bushings look relatively new, so I'm just waiting for something to present itself as the culprit.

Otherwise I just need to do some beautifications and basic maintenance stuff when the weather gets warmed up and it should be good to go for quite a while longer. It currently has 136k on it.

So there you go, the life & times of an old 5-er caretaker. This is the part where you all tell me I'm crazier than a shithouse rat for liking the things, but considering we paid $9k + another ~$2k in maintenance over 2 years, including wear items, for a car that originally stickered for $65k, I'd say it's been pretty good to us. The trick is learning about the car and it's quirks so you can do things preventatively and avoid surprises.

I'm with you.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - .RJ - 02-26-2013

To be honest, I would probably rather have an E39 540i or M5 than the E60....

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - SlimKlim - 02-26-2013

They look a hell of a lot better, and the $8k you'd save would go a long way in repairs. Get an 03 540i so everyone with a non M-sport 97-02 can be jealous of you.

Quote:Cons: The whole car unless you want to use it how I have... Burnouts, scare EVERYONE, roast through tires hourly, smile on your face when you start it up, make cool black designs in the pavement to look at in your future commutes.

Quote:The last two videos were taken today, the last video you'll hear a siren chirp and that's from an Ambulance that came after the previous video since people decided to call an ambulance, so they came and encouraged me to do it again!... hence the second video.

Might as well cut out the middle man and just donate that 12.5 to your local department of justice, since that'd be where your money would end up anyways.

Ugh, I should just buy that ^^ instead of fixing mine. Better paint (and color), twice the wheel horsepower. What's not to love.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - drivesideways46 - 03-12-2013

That's a decent deal, I really miss my supercharged Miata. Maybe it's time to call all those, "tell me when you're going to sell it" folks and ditch my P71.

Do. It.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - Jake - 03-12-2013

If I could unload the black car for ~3k, I probably would do it.

But I don't think it's really worth that much with the current chain-smoking habit...
