Nothing like scaring the piss out of your wife by accelerating AND decelerating!!

What's next on the menu scotty? A K04 or the blingy euro twin intercooler setup?!?

CaptainHenreh Wrote:What's next on the menu scotty? A K04 or the blingy euro twin intercooler setup?!?

nay to both. K04's aren't the value they should be. they're still a rather popular upgrade because its easy to retain many stock parts, but that means the kits are still too expensive for only another 40-50 hp over a chip (although the torque is really good). I'm tired of driving a tractor motor. i want to be able to take it to 7500 rpm and have it keep pulling and pulling. as for the twin coolers, the piping would be difficult on a 1.8T and a single good intercooler is easily as good as 2 stock RS4 intercoolers.

my plan, which changes every week, is to get me an 034EFI IC standalone and a GT2871R BB turbo (all the supporting stuff too of course). the key though, is the use of a monster SMIC and i'm going to run a gutter sized cat and downpipe up to an ATP pneumatic exhaust cutout, then run the stock exhaust from there. it will be a complete sleeper with about 350hp at the crank and i'll be able to retain a totally stock block. eventually i'll swap over an RS4 clutch and 7-8lb. flywheel too. that should do the trick.

- Dave - 08-25-2006

bastard! sounds eerily similar to what I wanted to do to the supra. I was going to run the diverter/cutout in front of the cat and just make a custom downpipe, which would allow for the use of the entire stock exhaust. Great minds think alike :-D

Holy shit, that's some serious modification Scotty!!

More power to ya!

Some advice, from someone who is obviously heavily into modifying cars, is to think long and hard about modifying your daily driver to that extent. No matter how good something looks on paper, hidden costs or other problems always develop. It would really suck to have your DD be out of commission for months because you had one bad knock...... or something important you may have overlooked or not expected breaks for some reason.

That said, go for it imo! Just be prepared for the plethora of stock parts that will have a much higher potential to break or require replacement after your upgrades (gearset, injectors, fuel pump, maybe fuel rails? etc.). I'm personally saving already for another set of stock axles just in case, and possibly a PPG dogbox gearset (which I REALLY don't want to have to spend money on hah)

One thing that you might consider: Does your current chip have the ability to be custom dyno tuned? If so, you could add maybe 20-30 more whp and more importantly to you flatten your torque/hp curves up to redline very easily. I don't know much about the GIAC chip, but most base maps on engine managements are left extremely rich and leave a lot on the table as far as horsepower and gas mileage.

Just food for thought! I'm a huge proponent of getting your ride custom tuned, especially if you can find a good tuner nearby.

Lee, if there's anyone to take advice from on that front it'd be you (and probably Travis). I definitely hear ya. I'm hoping to to the DD thing with a cheapy commuter car at some point, like an old civic. i know many here think i'm nuts but i believe the A4 has alot of potential, and its cheap enough now that i'd be taking a big hit (considering what i've put in it already) in selling it and starting over with something else.

at 350 horses (or thereabout) i'm actually not taxing that much, thankfully. the driveline in B5's are super strong and the internals have seen over 400 horses on a long term basis by others in the VAG community before buckling. as for management, i could certainly just have my chip re-burned instead of going standalone. but i think at that point i'd like some adjustability. and truthfully....this plan will change like 100 times in the next 2-3 years, which is probably when i'll actually get around to it

oh, and as for tuners...there are some big names down here, and in FL too. i'm hoping to take advantage of that while i'm still here. a really popular one is Batlground Engineering, they have a very fast supra drag car that they showcase their products in, and they've done a real killer WRX too.

Excellent, I know you'll make the right decisions when the time comes! 8)

new fuel filter got knocked out this afternoon.

whoever designed the placement of that filter is an asshole

- WRXtranceformed - 08-27-2006

Haha where is it?

For mine, you have to remove the entire rear seats (to do it the easiest anyway).

- ScottyB - 08-27-2006

WRXtranceformed Wrote:Haha where is it?

hooo man. if i was replacing the fuel pump i'd go through the rear seat like what you'd do. but for a filter....

- get under car. get dirt in your contacts.
- remove bolts that connect the fuel tank straps to the car. let tank drop down.
- jam stuff on top of the tank to make it drop a bit more since it's wedged up in there.
- move ebrake cable, fuel lines
- fish around for your metric torx bits and put one in your gearwrench
- reach up to the fuel filter that's nesting halfway on top of the tank you just dropped
- loosen strap holding filter in with said gearwrench/torx combo
- get more crap in your eyes, leaves in hair
- pull filter down, unbolt, spill gas everywhere, including open wounds
- put in new filter, bolt back in, push back up where it came from
- try in vain for an hour to get the tank straps to line back up, resort to creative uses of scrap 2x4's.
- curse Audi and pray filter lasts 1 billion miles

sometimes....i just don't know why i do this stuff. at least i know well enough now to get it done mad fast next time around

- WRXtranceformed - 08-27-2006

Damn dude, that sucks lol!

The filter on mine is attached to the bottom of the fuel pump. So it's the same procedure as changing out the pump. It isn't nearly the bitch that your install sounds like tho!

gas in open wounds will probably make them feel better.

lol ask RJ about miata fuel filters

all fuel filters should be located in the engine bay

- ScottyB - 08-30-2006

i dunno if any of you guys have noticed any kind of improvement in drivablilty due to changing out a fuel filter but damn...feels so different at low rpms now. could be the plugs talking, but after that filter got changed its smoooof!

oh yeah...you guys have any recommendations on glass fixers? i need to take care of my rock chip mark one of these days. should i just find whoever's close/cheap? or can you actually screw up a chip fix?
