RE: Project: 1976 911S - davej - 11-07-2017 Oh man, this thing is going to look so good in the Whole Foods parking lot! but seriously, I'm 100% on board with your direction. RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 11-07-2017 Amazon Fresh pickup. Get it right! RE: Project: 1976 911S - davej - 11-08-2017 I don't know how available they are in the Porsche forums, but I see CIBIE's pop up pretty frequently on the 02 sites. Maybe not the same style, but I never investigated them since they all seemed to be 200+ (hence my $40 rattle can Hella's) https://www.bmw2002faq.com/forums/topic/194138-fs-cibie-45-iode-yellow-fog-lights-covers-racing-team/ https://www.bmw2002faq.com/forums/topic/206411-fs-nos-cibie-iode-45-yellow-fog-lights-covers/ RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 11-08-2017 Here's some inspiration to get the blood pumping.
RE: Project: 1976 911S - Tyler.M - 11-11-2017 God, this has to be my favorite 911 body style RE: Project: 1976 911S - Steve85 - 11-11-2017 That yellow tarmac one is badass. I like the plan, of all the mods I would do lights last, though I suspect bumpers could be a big hurdle. RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 12-24-2017 I backburnered this project because there was a big pretty change in our lives that didn't pan out. I'm headed in to talk to the shop owner after New Year's and I sent him this video that RJ was kind enough to share with me. Ducktail and bumpers are the first order of business. The tail looks easy enough, but I think the bumpers are going to require more work. Wheels and tires will probably come next as I'm not a fan of the tall tires on there now. They're period correct, but there's too much flex/float in them. I'd like to go wider, but I'm not sure the fenders will allow for it... and I don't want to start shopping fenders. Lights will probably be last, although I think having four is overkill. I'll probably look into adding two in a such a way to downplay it as much as possible, but still looks badass. I'm not interested in the sponsor decals, but hood stripe(s) could be cool if they're way more subtle than this. I've always liked the porsche badging on the rocker panels, so I'd probably do that if I'm jumping into the world of vinyl. I think I'm going to try and get the car ready for a few events this year. I have no idea what, as I want to do things my kid can go to, but I'm guessing it's going to show me I want to do suspension too. Something on dirt like this would be cool... but, yeah. I had a really good year with RSUs, so I think I'm ready to throw some money at this thing. I originally thought I wanted to preserve as-is, but it's already a bastard of a car with mix/matched parts from various models. I also had some family pressures that impacted my desire do anything; those are gone. I need to just spend the money to get it over the finish line of what I want it to be. Project: 1976 911S - JPolen01 - 12-24-2017 I like where this is going. Carry on and keep us updated. RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 12-24-2017 Looks like the shop owner likes to take upgrades on Christmas Eve. ![]()
RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 01-05-2018 I've had (what I think is) the flu for the last few weeks, so I haven't had a chance to talk with the shop in person. I've been looking at auto-x in the area and am kinda itching to get out and do one. I realized over the last few days that I have pretty much dropped every hobby I had before I had a kid (unless you count travel) and that's just plain sad. I've got 2.5 months until the first event, so I might take a bit of an auto-x slant on the modifications. I guess cost will dictate that. Fun fact: I've never driven an auto-x. Make sure you put on your drivers suit at breakfast and dont take it off all day. You raced PCA so you should know how to do that. RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 01-07-2018 Finally managed to connect with the shop owner at the place I took the car for the brakes. He was going to be in the shop today to change the water pump on his truck, so we met up. He pulled out his laptop and we sat in his office comparing pictures of my car with the video posted above. As we talked through it, he took notes about what we were gonna do. I like this shop. I've had the car three different places and this is my preferred one. There's an old school Porsche mechanic (the kind with parts and papers everywhere) up north who's great, but it's hard for me to get to and he can never hold the car overnight... because there are so many old Porsches crammed in his garage. Anyway, I'm down an owner who will spend an hour with me on Saturday because I can never manage to get there before they close weekdays. We realized, watching the video, that guy has the same bumpers as I do. I'm also concerned about ground clearance, so I'm going to keep the stock bumpers and delete the dumb ass rubber impact things. We'll have to see what it looks like under the rear ones, but I'm hopeful because it was painted less than 10 years ago and has been garaged. If the bumper is clean, it'll be flish mount lights for the license plate. It's also going to get a ducktail at the same time. The shop has a painter he trusts, so Imma drop ship the ducktail to the shop and have them color match. I'm also going to put black triple stripe Porsche vinyl on the rocker panels; no hood stripes at this point. That'll probably do it for the first phase. The second phase will probably be deleting the front fog lights and running brake ducting from the holes. I'm gonna add two individual matte black CIBIEs and probably replace the stock lamps; changing the rings to matte black. After I get those on, I'm probably gonna replace the stock side mirror with something that has a similar vintage look. All the trim on the car is black, so I need to see how it looks with the lights changed to decide on mirrors. Chrome seems odd and the stock is body colored, but I might go black. The passenger side mirror was an option on the 912 - mine doesn't have it and it drives me crazy when trying to parallel park. After that, I'm probably looking at bigger wheels. The video looks like a wide body... I have no interest in replacing fenders. There's a good bit of space in my wheel wells, so I can probably go bigger than the 205/65/15. Research says 205/50/16 or 225/50/16 will fit on 6" wheels (7" likely won't fit without rolling). I'd rather go bigger, if they'll fit. Now, the question is how fast will all this happen? It depends entirely on $$$. My guess is I'll do the first phase and then sit on it for awhile to see how everything settles in. Just getting rid of those rubber bumpers and adding a ducktail will be huge, in my opinion. I guess this is the part where I start a spreadsheet. Here are some pics I took at the shop. This guy is obsessed with Alfas. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
RE: Project: 1976 911S - Ryan T - 01-07-2018 I love where this is going! Personally, I wouldn’t add any stripes beyond the rocker panels, I like the clean flowing look. As for the mirrors, I like the black mirror idea. RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 01-08-2018 With black door trim, I think black side mirrors are the right answer. I found a place that does repro of the original, but in black... which probably looks similar to the picture below. Unfortunately, they're sold out and I can't seem to find them elsewhere. I guess I could get a pair sprayed, but I'd really rather not do that. I don't really want sport mirrors, so I'm gonna contact this place and see if they'll have them again. http://www.allzim.com/store/door-mirror-black-right-911-74-77.html ![]() If you look for ducktails, wide bodies are definitely waaaaay more prominent. Interestingly, this picture has the shop run by that old school mechanic I was talking about in the background. This picture actually made me realize rubber tie downs won't work, because of the Porsche reflector. Argh. Swapping latches ain't gonna be easy.
Project: 1976 911S - Senor_Taylor - 01-08-2018 At this point, I have no idea what your car looks like anymore. Also, do that many exist in the same color as yours? I always thought yours was some unique one off respray. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk RE: Project: 1976 911S - .RJ - 01-08-2018 I like the ducktail on the narrow body. do it. and rally lights. A couple of years ago the tooling for making them was damaged. We checked with the manufacturer just before Christmas and they still had no ETA on them. Not sure if it’s simply not a priority or there is some other technical issue preventing them from being made. Sorry. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 03-24-2018 So I haven't done shit because we almost moved to Europe. Turns out we're not, but I decided to spend too much money on a vacation there so I've put plans on hold - shocker. Anyway, this auction is probably the closest I'll get to market value since mine is a 2.7 911S engine in a 912E body. I don't know if the 912 is worth more than 912E, but many of the same restoration bits are similar. If I had to guess, the 912 is more desireable because of the long hood and the lack of US bumpers. Regardless, I'll be watching this one. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-porsche-911-912-conversion/ RE: Project: 1976 911S - Apoc - 03-30-2018 $47,000 |
