It does t3h shock absorbings. I never figured it out, though... I guess it's for keeping impacts off the rider and conserving energy instead of increasing grip (like an FS). Seems silly, to me. - balactm - 09-04-2008 i got my trek for 410 and love it. you don't really need a 1200 dollar bike unless you're an experienced rider and going off jumps. a less expensive bike will be able to take less impact, but, like i said, unless you're jumping you won't need something THAT expensive. - .RJ - 09-04-2008 87jdmmr2 Wrote:unless you're jumping you won't need something THAT expensive. Depends on how, and how much you're using it. If you're riding it a few times a year, or just going down fire roads and the C&O canal, then a $400 bike will do just fine. If you're riding it more often on more technical terrain and crashing it a lot  then a bike with a stronger frame and better components will be money well spent. I had a cheaper mtb a few years ago and I did nothing but tear that thing up. Replaced it with my Trek 8000 ($1200 new in '04) and have had very few problems with it. - Ginger - 09-04-2008 I'm with RJ on that one. If you really want to go mountain biking, you need to spend a good chunk of change to get something durable enough to stand up to the punishment it can lay on a bike. A well executed jump or drop really isn't that destructive to bike (watch an expert BMX'er or cross country racer, it's almost elegant to watch)... but hanging up your chainring on a big log roll, pitching the bike in a poor execution crossing a rock garden, casing your wheel, whatever, can really lay some damage to cheap alternatives. Sure, if you don't want to use it often, a cheap bike will work.... or if you want to use it on fire roads and dirt trails. But if you're going to bomb through the sixpack downhills, visit fountainhead, or something to that effect, you're going to be spending a lot of time working on, and cursing a cheap bike. - Evan - 09-04-2008 Alan doenst buy a bike because he cant find one for $24 or less. Theres a shocker. - .RJ - 09-04-2008 Evan Wrote:Alan doenst buy a bike because he cant find one for $24 or less. Theres a shocker. Gotta save that money for a RV to haul your shit to the track... - Ole - 09-04-2008 I'm willing to go higher. - .RJ - 09-04-2008 Higher than.... $ ? Or are you talking about higher in the air than Andrew and I get when we go over the bars? - Ole - 09-04-2008 $100? - Ginger - 09-04-2008 Don't bring me into your mess! - Evan - 09-04-2008 Ole Wrote:$100?go to walmart, pick something off the rack, ride it twice, and when it sucks you can throw it in the garage and say that cycling just isnt for you. or if actually want to ride a real bike you're going to have to spend at least as much as a set of 2/32 toyos that last 2 weekends. - Ole - 09-04-2008 Find me a bike for that and I will buy it. Summer is almost gone and this thing will be sitting in the garage all winter....... - .RJ - 09-04-2008 http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ ... 70948.html The basket would be a nice touch for you ![]() Seriously, whats your budget? - Ole - 09-04-2008 Decent bike for a good price.
