Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - Apoc - 12-16-2010

Glad someone bumped this thread 'cause I didn't want to go looking for it.

I just put on some Continental ExtremeContact DWS, replacing worn out summer Potenzas. Even with traction control off, I had a helluva time getting the car to break loose in 3". Tirerack rated them as "exceptional snow traction" but I expected them to be more along the lines of the PZero AS and Pilot Sport AS I had previously. I've never had a winter tire, so I can't compare, but if you're getting an AS check these out.

edit: They come with a 1-year manufacturer road hazard warranty. Big Grin

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - WRXtranceformed - 12-31-2010

These damn 912s are almost shot again after 20k miles. Fortunately there's still a 40k warranty on them, so hopefully I'll get a 50% proration credit again. I think part of it might be that the rear toe/camber can't really be adjusted and my car has an inside tire wear issue from the factory. I'm buying a rear camber kit when I get my new tires and I might give these one more shot...after that there's a set of Nittos that I've heard great things about...I think it's the 555? I'll have to double check.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - Goodspeed - 06-09-2011

Sigh.

Tires needed: 225/45/15. Don't care about wear/noise/comfort, etc. Want grip. Lots of grip. Gripgripgripgripgrip.

The Hankook RS3's I want are back-ordered seemingly to infinity - they apparently didn't expect it to be so popular this year, but they (again hearsay) don't want to bump up production and I've heard rumors that they won't be available until late fall/early winter. Way to drop the ball right before summer Hankook.

The wheels to mount them on are in the mail and should be here next week. I'd hate to waste them by letting them sit in a closet until late this fall, realistically next spring.

I hardly drive the car, but the plan is to get back into more auto-x, driving to-from as well.

Option 1: Keep running the stock wheels and 195 S.drives. I put them on last August and they only have ~3k miles on them, little camber wear but not much else. Grippy and well within my means as a driver - but I want MOAR. Also aforementioned sexy wheels lay dormant *tear*

Option 2: Toyo R1R. $150 more for a set of 4 than the RS3's for not as exceptional a tire it seems. Would still probably rock my socks but that and the $ would sting a bit.

Option 3: Something like a NT01, RA-1, R888 etc - roughly same cost as R1R. I don't drive the car often, never again in the rain (if I can help it) - is this a feasible or horrible idea? I won't be tracking the car this year - good b/c I'd kill myself with an R-comp, bad b/c the tires would be somewhat wasted. Not autocross compounds. Probably a horrible idea.

Aaaaand go.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - xvxax - 06-10-2011

Hmm, I guess I'll start then.

Option 2: Toyo R1Rs are great tires. For a car your size, and for most conditions they're as fast or faster than the RS3s. Probably around half of the lightweight street tire class cars use them. They don't like a ton of heat or weight. They're better in the rain and cool than RS3s. That's really all I got. They have 205/50 in the Star Spec for $108 at tirerack. Is that close enough? Since you aren't competing for any particular class this information probably doesn't matter much. If you wanna pony up the bux, they're awesome tires and they'll do what you want them to. If you're sure the RS3 isn't coming back, just get these so you don't waste the $ you just spent on wheels.

Option 3: The problem with option 3 is that r-compounds cycle out. There's probably a decent chance that driving around on the street will put enough heat into the tire to count as a cycle. The more cycles you get, the harder the tire will get. That means on the way to events you'll put a cycle into your tires, then another cycle at the event, then a third on the way home. It's not really a huge deal but the grip diminishes on a per cycle basis, and this is one of the reasons you see a lot of people who drive to/from events with tire trailers. This probably means that the tires will be harder than a top street tire before you wear them out, and certainly way before you would wear a top street tire out. R-comps also hate the cold. Really, really hate the cold. I've never driven on r-comps below 50 degrees, but I can't imagine its fun on the street. You probably won't kill yourself though. Save the r-compounds for when you buy a tire trailer or something.

I know there is no Discount Tire(brick and mortar) locations in Virginia, but I think they are in North Carolina, and are all over Texas. I had a great experience with them on Saturday. Got 215/45R17 Kumho Ecsta AST mounted on my 15 spoke Euros. I had previously had Falken Ziex 912 mounted on my Momo Winter wheels. Will let you know how things go with these.

Have the 912s on my car now. I love them so far. Not to loud and a pretty smooth ride. How did yours do with a little snow on the ground if you ever experienced any? Why did you switch to the Kumhos? When I ordered my falkens from discount tire the sales guy kept telling me the falkens were much better tires.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-21-2011

Let us know, I actually preferred ASTs over the falken azenis.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - Evan - 11-25-2011

anyone have any suggestions for an all season truck tire that does well in the snow? (Truck is 2wd so needs to be really good in snow)
Im leaning towards these

PS- FUCK 18" wheels.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - .RJ - 11-25-2011

I have a set of Michelins (I think LTX?) on my minvantruck, and they've been great in any weather - and it looks like I should get 60k miles out of them. Probably expensive, but they're wearing great.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - ScottyB - 11-25-2011

DON'T get Goodyear SilentArmors. tough as hell and great in snow, but impossible to balance (used to be slightly annoying, now drives me insane) and overpriced.

I apologize, it was Falken Ziex ZE-512, that I had previously. I looked back on page 3 from this thread which was back in 2007, to verify that. The reason I went with the Kumho Ecsta AST was to try something new. I know this probably would have happened to anybody, but back in February 2010, I was on a tightly curving exit ramp and lost control. It was chilly out, and maybe I hit some black ice? That rubbed me the wrong way.

They were pretty good in a little snow if I remember correctly the few times it did snow back when I was living in Virginia. I had got them because they were all season, and my Azenis st115 were deplorable in snow/ice. Last year we got less than one inch of snow down here in San Antonio, and it actually stuck to the asphalt. In a word, it shut the whole city down. All freeways in town were closed till noon that day. LOL.

When I walked in to Discount Tire, they tried to up sell like crazy...Well you know Sir, the Pirellis are better, and all this ridiculousness. I want tires that cost less than $100 per, thank you very much. I got about 24,000 miles out of my ZE-512, but they started to get this crazy wearing on the inside tread of all four tires, I think because I got a bad alignment, but needed something different anyway.

damn, that sucks. they get very good reviews for snow traction. i had considered dropping the coin on them

I originally bought the hankooks, but after holding onto my money for a 3 weeks discount tire direct decided they couldnt get me the tires so Im back to square one.

looks like im going with these. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+AT+KL78&partnum=67SR8KL78OWL
siping looks good and tread design looks similar to the blizzaks i had for my miata, so they should be good in the snow (without having to go dedicated snow tire)

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - D_Eclipse9916 - 12-12-2011

I just ended up ordering some General Grabber HTS. Just went into merchants and they price matched tire rack without having to deal with ordering and carrying in the tires myself.

Regular goodyears that are cracking and were bald had absolutely no problem going through the ridiculous amount of snow at its worst point (and towing my moms m3 through the thick snow). It literally didnt even engage traction control. So I doubted needing any more aggressive tire. 5500lbs + awd in NOVA is way more than I need, its not like I go off road. So I went with the quiet and low rolling resistance (but also the best handling according to tire rack) tires.

Edit; Just saw your 2wd, definitely get a bit more agressive tire.

yeah, hate to say but i don't think i could recommend them. the alignment shop that attempted to balance them twice (very skilled guys) said it wasn't the first set of goodyear truck tires they had come in like that, so i don't think i'm an isolated case.

You do realize those are E-load rated? Those are going to suck for driving around town, I like my cushy passenger tires.

Damnit, nevermind. I had clicked it so it showed my size, and for some reason my size in the same tires is E. Continue on your way, im dumb.

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - JustinG - 12-12-2011

DJ lemme know how you like those Generals, the SAAB is going to need new tires in the next few months, but not too worried about it this winter. If it gets too bad, the Jeep will see the roads more then the SAAB.

That General HTS seems to be the best "Highway A/S" truck tire in my size 255/55/18

Re: The tires thread "So I need tires..." - ScottyB - 01-06-2012

need help deciding. my Potenza RE760's are just about toast. looking for another ultra high performance summer tire with a 280 treadwear or higher. i will have gotten the better part of 35k miles out of these 760's including an autocross and lots of hooning around, and they're 300 treadwear with plenty of grip, so i want to stay in that range for my needs. they stayed perfectly balanced and smooth...so far the longest lasting, best "performance" tire i've ever had, so count me as a bridgestone fan. these will be 205/55-16.

RE050A Polo Position - driven on these a few times and they have amazing grip for the kind of cars they tend to come on as OE equipment. very quiet, at least when new. should drive well in rain. i've heard they wear down quickly considering their 280 treadwear.

S-04 Pole Position - looks like a slightly more sporty version of the 050s? i'm trying to figure out where they stand in comparison. the tread looks less squirmy although i'm sure they'll ride louder. priced about the same, treadwear the same.

970AS Pole Position - the cushier option. seem to ride nicer and will last longer as well as not driving like wooden blocks in the winter. floppy sidewall, obviously less total grip, cheaper than the first 2.

Conti ExxxxxxxxxxtreeeemeContact DW - these seem to get great reviews for grip and wear while still having a decent sidewall. look like they'd be great in the rain. never had a conti before, anybody have feedback? priced well.

i'd like something thats ultimately not unbearable on the highway but will also not roll over and disintegrate at a random autocross once or twice a year. i'm expecting at least 25k miles out of them with a solid alignment. not too worried about snow...if it does, i'll take the 4x4.
