owning only one car that has a warranty that I dont really care about has been so freeing.

RE: WTF should I buy (A consolidated list of bad decisions) - Senor_Taylor - 11-05-2020

As you all may know, I clearly have some kind of brain damage. Just in the last 2 months, I've listed the e21 for sale twice, then taken it down. Same with the Fiesta. I don't know what I'm doing and I'm probably having some kind of quarter life crisis.

If you don't know what to do, the best choice, is to do nothing. That's probably what I'll do for now.

HOWEVER,

I'm putting thought into what may eventually replace the Fiesta. I like the car. It's really quick, it handles well, it drives like a modern car, have Bluetooth, air condition, and most importantly, it's UBER RELIABLE while making boosty boi woosh noises. It's a great deal of fun and I'm surprised more people don't have them in the club. However, the car doesn't feel like "me". It's a fun appliance for the most part. I don't connect with it. I don't want to drive it to cars and coffee, I don't want to take it on long road trips through the mountains, I don't stare at it in awe of its beauty. I'm not in LOVE with it.

For these reasons, I've been thinking I want to get something that is perhaps a BIT less reliable, but a bit more engaging and a bit more comfortable to be in. Perhaps really all I need to do is swap in a set of heated recaros from the higher trim ST and that will do it for me, I'm not sure. What I've been considering is swapping out my 13k Fiesta for a ~15k or so BMW 128i. A modern e30 with bluetooth and heated leather, working AC, and all the modern amenities seems really appealing, but is it a case of "the grass is always greener"? I'm not sure. I'm looking for a local one to drive (way harder to find than you may imagine, there are only like 40 manual 128is for sale nationwide right now).

That's how I feel about my truck.  I think I am struggling at letting go of the freedom of my 20s for having a fun sports car and "dont give a fuck attitude".  The adult in me keeps creeping in and saying: Why?

You don't just have a truck though. It's a RAPTOR! find some sweet jumps.

this.  you don't "just have a truck."  Rex "has a truck."

you've got a motherfucking twin turbo baja prerunner with bypass shocks, 315s and near as makes no difference to 14 inches of suspension travel.  that's not a truck, its a monster that just happens to have leather and heated seats and a warranty.  i wouldn't lose any sleep about dumping a vette to keep that.  you've driven enough cool second cars that another fun one will come along in a few months and you'll enjoy that for a while.

+1. You have a sports automobile, just for a different kind of track. Calling it "a truck" is a bit like calling a 'vette a "hatchback".

A vette is a liftback anyway (or regular coupe in some examples), so you'd be super wrong calling it a hatch.

potato, potahto

would an FR-S be inadequate? otherwise i still think the 128i is a good choice since you really want to stick to BMW.

I want a BMW. Fiesta gives more giggles per mile than a BRZ even though the BRZ is a better pure performer. I drove Tyler's BRZ at VIR and fell in love.

I kept thinking z4 coupe, but you wanted room for doggo.

Whatever you do, rest assured it won't matter much because you'll change your mind in 18 months.

Nothing wrong with that. I want to own as many cars as possible. Variety is the spice of life.

Fleet is currently boat, raptor, LR4 (wife's vehicle), corvette, 928S and trailer.

LR4, Raptor, Boat and trailer are oil changes.  With proper tools that I have, each of those are 5-10 minute affairs, I can probably get my entire fleet's oil change done in the same time it takes you to deal with a service department and dropping/picking your car up for one oil change. I even get free oil changes on the raptor for 2 years and I do it myself to avoid the hassle of the dealer. We also don't do a ton of miles since 2.5 years ago we both switched to full time telework.  Hell, since March my wife has put 900 miles on the LR4.  We have owned it 4.5 years and 21k miles.  Not quite Apoc status, but really low considering its the vehicle that we use 99% of the time with the family.

Taxes....hahah.  I pay 10% (yes about 10%) of what my Fairfax county taxes were.  The Raptor was $358 for PP taxes this year, would have been about $3k in PP taxes in NOVA.

At the end, yes its more to keep up with, but its something I still love.  928S is a big money making affair (most my projects are to keep me busy and make money), the Z06 is the hmm and haw because I can still make money selling it right now.  Once covid pricing is over, thatll be a lot more difficult.

Z4 has a big hatch for a dog! It's right up his alley!

And people wonder why the Montana LLC registration thing is a thing...

I joked with my buddy that wants a F430 manual in NOVA that he would save significant money to register it at my house and SHIP the car back and forth to my house once a year for inspection than it would be to register it there.

I gotta go find a good place to run it out hard.  NC has some fun gravel and dirt roads, but no real jumpies.  I think the z06 was kind of an impulse covid buy since I didnt have a race car.
