Sooooo the Ralliart is done for DD duty. Not 100% sure what I'm doing with it just yet but trading it in for -$6,000 is definitely not it. So I need a new DD for the girlfriend/roadtrip vehicle for me. Rules are little different this time:
no boost
no awd
ABSOLUTELY no fancy trannys (DCT/DSG)
no fun allowed
requirements: 4 door, auto(boo), big enough for a ~300 pound ginger giant, actually has a dealership in or around Harrisonburg that doesn't suck shit (so no to Dodge this time)
wishlist: ~40mpg, hatchback, under 80k miles, less than 6-7 years old, lime green paint(not srs)
Suggest the most boring, most reliable $10,000 car you can think of. Not seeing much probably because this is what 90% of America is looking for at any given moment. Found a few $8,000 Fits, Civics seem to be $12-15k or 10 years old. Found a few Focus/Fiestas as well but their tranny issues are pretty well documented at this point. There is a brand new 2019 Fiesta SE sitting on the Ford dealer lot around the corner from me that they're probably dying to get rid of for $15,000, 0% APR and an extended warranty. Tempting but the I have DCT PTSD at the moment.

Pretty sure the newer fiestas/focuses still have bad transmission problems with their DCT. One of my coworkers has a newer one she's trying to lemon law because of it.

i mean, the Fit sounds like a good... fit. What about an Elantra or Veloster? Perusing cargurus for some of the criteria it seems that they would also be under the $10k range, under 60k miles, and should have plenty of reliable/eco miles left with the standard 10/yr / 100k mile PT manf warranty that come with Hyundai cars. i ignored the Accent because it's an Accent.

Ugh figured they'd have that solved by now. Think it was something super minor like a leaking front seal causing it to lose pressure during shifts. They seemed to be stepping up to fix it after those articles gained a lot of traction. I was only remotely considering it because A) the dealership is 2 minutes from my house and B) They offered a 7 year 100k mile warranty on it. I'll take that gamble over a 8 year old Honda with 120k+ miles but there are a few decent deals out there for the Fit. I just have to drive 100 miles it seems.

Bro/sis-in-law just had Ford buy back their (2015ish?) DCT Focus. Even after a new clutch and multiple other services, it was still just not fun to drive. Juddery, jerky, I'm actually shocked to hear they may still be using the things.
I like the Fit in general but definitely drive one first. They're dog slow.

Nice catch, most of the stuff on CarGuru has been way out in Woodbridge or Sterling and while I will drive out there to save a few grand I'd rather not have to. Checked out most of the dealers here in town but skipped out on Hyundai unintentionally. Initially considered a Velostar but the 2 door aspect kinda kills it for me. The kid is slower than snail shit getting in and out of the car with his own door. I don't even wanna live that nightmare getting him out of a 2 door. Did find a nice 2015 Elantra that definitely fit the bill. Will probably check that out this weekend for sure.

the Fit is the slowest car in the world... outside of an old sohc civic. its actually faster than those cars. 107hp is basically nothing. I didn't need speed... my truck is fast enough and I have a race car for God sake.
We HUNTED cargurus and other searches for a deal. for whatever reason, they want a premium for a "sport" though it only gets you a body kit, slightly better sound, and cruise control. but there are still deals out there... I will say, most of the cars what were a deal did have an accident... if you care.
the L series motors in the Fit will do 300k miles with a standard 10k mile synthetic oil change apparently. the forum kids preach the maintenance... follow it and it will last "forever." Manuals are a rare bird in this chassis... at least for sale. it seems like most people just keep the car and they don't often go to the secondary market until they are HIGH mileage.
IMHO its a great little car if you have a kid. part of the reason we got the Fit was because of the nephew and aging family (you should see my 4.5 foot tall aunt try to get in the Tundra). it has a 60/40 rear seat... carry the kid and still drop the seat to carry more stuff.
in my research, for under 60k miles, 4 doors, reliable, etc... the Fit is the best deal out there. Conveniently I'm a Honda fanboi too

Honda Fit, OR you can buy a CPO VW TDI for around $10k. They have a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty plus 4 years on basically everything emissions/engine related.

Its not super fun to drive but you can get them with 3-pedals if thats your thing which does make it a litle more tolerable and they should run reliably for a looooong time. I cant think of anything else that fits what you need at that price, and bonus, lots of warranty.
We've got a bout 3k miles on the 2015 Golf TDI SEL we bought and no problems, got 50mpg on the last trip to Richmond and back. I kept thinking the range on the dash was wrong and something was broken. "No way this thing goes 600 miles on 12 gallons"

Looks like 2016 is where Ford finally got their shit together on the trans issues. Apparently it was a lot of little things.
With all three of these fixes now in effect, Ford Australia’s head of communications, Martin Gunsberg, told CarAdvice that the great majority of vehicle owners that are on the final specification fix for the powershift transmission are happy with their vehicles.
“We’ve fitted the latest clutch to around 12,000 vehicles and we’ve seen a very high customer acceptance rate. Any repairs, including the latest clutch fitment, are completed under warranty. We’ve extended the warranty for wet shudder up to seven years, dry shudder up to five years and 10 years on the TCM. Any which way, we’ve got you covered," he added.
I'm really only considering this because there's 2 lots full of these things and $12k + 0% APR and a 60,000 mile warranty is pretty insane. If this was flying under the radar like the Ralliart/EVO X nonsense Id be a lot more concerned but Ford definitely seems like they're taking this shit seriously. Still a backburner option that I'm checking out first because it's right outside my door.

In the lead right now is a $10k 2015 Elantra in town with 75k miles, a $7,000 2011 Fit in Front Royal with 88k miles or a 2010 Fit all the way out in Dumfries for $5,500.
