I mean, everyone is gonna say Glock. I don't like glocks at all. Of the Tupperware pistols I say Sprinfield XD in 9mm or 40. I personally like .45acp, also available in the XD lineup but my pistol of choice in that caliber is the classic 1911 and clones (see my avatar). CZ makes a good pistol if you like ugly guns (wink and rexy)

Also, don't worry yourself to death about caliber either. 9mm and above will be sufficient, with proper self defense ammunition, and 9mm is cheap enough that you can get comfortable and skilled at shooting it without spending a fortune.

My next pistol is going to be a hammerless Taurus .38 special revolver...Taurus is a really good maker. Stay away from the millennium model though.

If shit is really going to go down and America turns to anarchy, unless you've already got a fortified installation somewhere I don't think any amount of guns or stores of food are going to save you. You've got to really think about the scope of what it would mean for the US govt to collapse and for people to REALLY panic (not just sit in line for gas for 3 hours).
I'm going to invest all of my money in sweet tea vodka and canned mixers and wait out my impending doom with the most attractive girl that is willing to sit and drink with me. THAT'S THINKING AHEAD FUCKERS!! I'll let y'all shoot it out while I'm getting my cutty in the woods somewhere :lol:

i don't really care for glocks. i know they're pretty much bulletproof (lol!), but just haven't cared too much for the few i've shot. maybe i should just go for the 226, but shit, $800?
and yes, 9mm is for me.

I already have a .357 revolver. I want the smallest frame possible. We have had this discussion...the .357 adds to the girth. But if I can find one at the right price I wouldn't kick a .357 outta bed.

Like I said, go heft everything, see what feels best. If it's uncomfortable or too heavy or too light you won't shoot it. And if you're not going to shoot it, don't buy it.
And really, I mean, 800 dollars is expensive...but is it really more than just a question of saving a little longer?

I second the .357. Revolvers are more rugged too. I like single action, myself. Ruger's new guns have a plate that moved up when the gun's cocked so the hammer never hits the firing pin directly, and thus, should basically never, ever break.

If you're going to spend in the 5 - 600$ range, just go ahead and get an HK 9mm usp on consignment at a small gun store or something. New they are like 750, but they are really sweet guns.

Everyone hate on the Glocks all you want.
Since the break in period i've never had one issue. "Some people" have had issues... reassembly issues... and failures. Again, i'm not one of those people.

the Springfield is a direct Glock knock off... why not go with the gun that started it all? H&K would be better than the Springfield IMO
but at the price, you wont beat a glock.

Mike, at the risk of dragging this further off topic (I think there was a topic?), the two 9mm I know of that come well recommended are the Ruger P95 (lighter weight since it's a composite grip) and the S&W 6906 or shorter 6904, both of which are heavier but all steel and will last forever. They all go for ~$400 on gunbroker.com, Town Gun in Martinsville has new P95s for ~$325 and some excellent condition police trade-in 6906s for about the same price.
For a first time buyer like I was not long ago, I still try to point out that a revolver is much simpler and easier to understand. I was able to immediately feel comfortable with mine, while I'm still figuring out this semi-auto P22 I just got. Taurus' site might be a nice place to start if you want to consider one, they have weights/dimensions/prices listed and good variety.

Interesting you all mention 9mm's - most of the self-defense fanatics I know say to stay away from them as they are much less likely to stop a determined intruder. Plus out here in CA, you really only have one shot (in the eyes of the law to fall under the purview of "self-defense") - so you better make that one shot a good one that'll take out your intruder for good (no way for them to pursue a lawsuit against you).

the technology of the bullet has come a long way. most of the people that are down on 9mm remember the old ball 380s. A hydroshock 9mm that is stacked with powder and shot from a +p fire arm will inflict plenty of damage... thats a promise.
I keep 115gr Silver tipped and 125gr(i think) Hydros at the house stacked for personal protection.
