We used to shoot anything we could get our hands on up at the range on 33. Yard art santa's, pumpkins, kegs, stoves, car doors, etc. we used to test different ammo on the doors to see what would go through... its fun to shoot tennis balls, 40oz bottles @ 25 yards, etc. Sometimes... a helpless butterfly would go across the range... and we'd all open up and kill it... its damn hard to hit a moving butterfly at 15 yards!

I love that. we used to walk the creek and shoot at schools of minnows to see how many we could get to float and have a race to cut down saplings.

My friend and I field-stripped and cleaned the 1911 - it a nice gun, especially for the price. We're headed to the range today to wage war on paper targets - I'll post up a full review tonight.

I usually just shot at shit in the garden or our field...squirrels, groundhogs, skunks, rabbits, racoons. That what I've always used for target practice.

So, here's a short review of my new Rock Island Armory 1911. These guns are standard .45 1911, and as such, there is are *ton* of aftermarket parts and accessories available, not to mention the parts are interchangeable with almost all the other 1911s out there. From the side view, its a large gun, but is very narrow, thanks to the 8 round, single stack magazine.

My 1911 was purchased from the Quantico PX for the princely sum of $360. It came with a case, a lock, and a single Novak mag (which is a vast improvement over the crap that RIA used to supply). It was absolutely bone dry when I opened it up, so a friend and I field stripped it (which takes less that 1 minute) greased the friction surfaces and went over every part with a light coat of oil. This improved the action greatly, and things looked good for the trip to the range.
At the range yesterday, I first loaded up some standard .45 Auto FMJ. The first few rounds went fine, but over the course of the next 25-30 rounds, the gun experienced 4 failures to feed. The rounds were getting hung up either on the feed ramp or the extractor - my bet was the extractor. The next ~140 rounds, including two mags of hollowpoints, fed and fired with absolutely no problems. When I stripped the gun afterwards, I found the extractor had a little more wear on it - so I'm guessing that it just needed a little bit of break in to function reliably. The next 500 rounds will be very telling, I'm sure.
As for my firing impressions, they were *very* good. Trigger pull is smooth and predictable, and the stock sights with no adjustment seemed to be fine. My trigger technique is horrible and my grip is pretty bad, but I was consistently hitting (or coming very close to hitting) soda cans at a range of ~15 yards. Yes, yards. The way the range was set up, we couldn't get any closer than that. I'll be interested to see what kind of groups I can get at a more realistic range.
Overall, this is a great gun, and highly recommended to anyone who wants a basic, inexpensive 1911.

Get a Lee beginner loading kit for about 100.00 and load your own for some really cheap shooting.

Thats a nice lookin Gun John! I prefer blue to the satin but it is a nice look with the dark wood. How do you like the checked piece on the front of the grip? I have been thinking about getting that w/ stock GI grips or getting a Pacmire American Legend grip. That debate still rages in my head. You will get the jams every now and again, mine still jams one or two in 50, and I have put hundreds though it in the year I've had it. I wonder how much one of those would cost a joe off the street? My grandfather can buy from those stores (Airforce, retired) so I might see what all they got. My .45 is getting up in age, 70+ years, and I am just worried that wear is gonna tear it up. I guess that is what I got the hi-point for though. Anytime you wanna go shooting let me know, I would like to compair the Colt to yours. Also, if you want to start loading you own ammo I would be interested in going in on the equipment needed to do it. The cost of ammo keeps me from taking the 1911 out as much as I would like. Haha... My friend brought one of those to the range too. After shooting the 45 all afternoon, I could hardly tell the Walther was firing at all...

my friend takes his p22 and glock 45 when we go shooting and there is no comparison between the two. the glock feels like it's gonna break your wrists after a few clips, while the p22 has substantially less kick in recoil and in the wallet. because i'm poor and just like shooting, $12 for 500 .22 rounds is a really good deal compared to the un-holy ammo prices for his 45 or my 9mm

You guys really ought to consider a reloading set. even one at a time you can load them up pretty quick once you get the routine down. Buy bulk brass so you always have some prepped and sized, prime them, fill them and squeeze a bullet in... I load the .357 by hand and have about 600 cases so I never run out
