Nick, Rex, and I rode down to Staunton to the gun store and picked up a new toy...
This is a Hi-Point 9mm Carbine. ItÔÇÖs basically a blowback action pistol with a long barrel and a goofy looking stock. They are made in Ohio and are known for being cheap but accurate and a good value. IÔÇÖm going out shooting tomorrow so I will write a review of it. I paid $138 for the gun itself w/ sling and two mags (talked them out of the second one). There are currently no real hi-cap mags available but I will be ordering the largest made (15rnd) Monday along with a muzzle brake.

Anyone ever had/shot one?
Also, is 9mmX19 the same as 9mm Luger? I am pretty sure it is. The only other 9mm round I have been able to find is 9mmX18 for the small Russian/German/Chech/Polish pistol from ww2 era.

A gun in general, or what you bought?
I've shot a Sig Sauer .40, 12 gauge shotgun, some 9 mm (I don't remember), and a HK MP5. Too bad I can't get an automatic rifle of my own

Nope, never shot a Hi-Point. My coworker (with the M4 auto, among others) didn't have anything good to say about them, but his opinions were based on their early work. I'm sure things have changed since then.
I looked at their .45 handgun, but wasn't convinced. I ended up getting a 1911 instead 8)

What kind of 1911 did you get? Mine is Colt. I have always liked Kimber and Wilson Combat also, but don't have $1000s to spend. The Hi-Point is hated by people who have spent tons of money on guns because it is cheap and it does what it is designed to do. People who spent that $1500 on the M4, MP5 or whatever tend to have much hate. I'm not comparing it to those much finer firearms, I'm just pointing out that if you don't mind dealing with something cheesier it seems to be a really good deal. Their pistols from my reading are jamtrap junk but the Carbine is supposed to be a trusty piece. The pistols look like water guns...which I'm sure does not help the case. Once again, according to my internet reading, the early Carbines (95'-98') were the most crappy of the crappy which would make sense if your friend tried an older model. I'm looking forward to trying it out tomorrow and drawing my own conclusions.

Yes, must have a FFL and pay the $250/year tax on it...oh...and you have no rights. The ATF can come to your house at 3AM and demand to see the gun and all its parts.

I got the Rock Island Armory G.I. model. I don't actually have it yet, my dad picked it up for me at Quantico this week, so I'll get it on Saturday.

After a week of exams it was time to shoot some shit. Nick and I headed out 33W over the mountain. Just across the line in WV there is a public range back in the woods. It was a really nice place for what it was. We were preparing for war against the army of Sam Walton, led by General DR. Thunder. Yes, it was us and the hi-point vs. a 24 pack of soda.
The Gun-
As stated earlier a 9mm Hi-Point Carbine. At first glance it is very cheesy, made of light metal and covered in plastic. This cheapness however gives it the rugged, dependable feel of an AK. However the powerand stage presence of the AK are lost on it.
The overall experience with it was A+. We shot 150 ball rounds without a single jam, misfire, or otherwise issue. The common complaint I read about the weapon was frequent jams and feed problems. This gun, with $7 a box ÔÇ£beer canÔÇØ ammo, showed no signs of slowing down even at HIGH rates of fire.
It has a very ergonomic design that fits the human form well. It is a very shooter friendly gun with no kick to speak of and a fair trigger pull for a sub $200 (new) firearm. The iron sites were protected and target acquisition is made easy by the old style loop site. As far as the fit and finish, that would be a down side. The stock is held together by bolts and is split down the center, which does not help the cheap feel.
Our Complaints-
We had a problem with the magazines not staying in the bottom of the gun once loaded. Even if you smack them in they didnÔÇÖt seem to lock. If I can figure out how to load videos online I will post a blooper where this problem reared its head. The bolt is rather uncomfortable to pull back and a strait BITCH to lock open for cleaning or inspection. Other then that we were very happy with the feel and the performance of this weapon, I consider it my best firearms purchase to date.
Our war was waged and we were the victors. In 150 rounds we managed to get all 24 of the cans, we averaged 3 hits per 10 shot mag. ThatÔÇÖs not bad w/ pistol ammo and iron sites from at least 50 yards. We were shooting pretty fast.
So yeah, we just wasted a bunch of ammo and soda. But it was a fun break from school and it was a good opportunity to evaluate the new melon splitter.
We found this at the site...we didn't do it...
Other things found shot up-
Beer bottles
Compac Computer
Cell Phone
House Phone
Land Rover CD Changer
Basket Ball
Baking dish
Skeet (hehehe)
golf balls
