For a turbo car, I'd recommend going with the Euro Formula M1 10w40 - the 5w30 stuff is just too thin.
M1 5w30 is fine for the WRX. Its what the manual recommends, and what I used for however many thousands of track miles on mine.

im using amsoil 5-30 and my car is running better than ever. that was the original viscosity recommend by VAG but they now recommend 0-40 after the sludge issues. i'm going to get the 5-30 analyzed by blackstone labs and see what i find....if it looks good i'm sticking with amsoil 5-30.

Why? Oil is oil.... its not really rocket science.

If you compare the specs on the 0W30 castrol, its closer to most other 10W40 oils. The # rating only specifies a range of viscosity (cST).

0w30 is just too thin for the m20. The e30s I have heard running 0w30 have horrible valve tick. Its best suited for a 10w40 to 20w50.

Oil might not be a big deal on an N/A Honda. But on this Euro junk and some of the older turbo cars the oil choice for the time of year can be a big big deal. Turbos can be blown from multiple starts with to thin an oil. Too thick an oil can not allow proper flow to the turbo. I'm sure the BMW is about the same.

I picked up a new oil filter for the STI. Tried the Purolator PureOne. It was like a dollar or two more than the standard... though I'd try it out.
