You'll DD the Miata right up until you put a rollbar and seats in it. Then it will suck, and you will DD this other thing.
Understand that you will have to parallel park this thing occasionally. You will have to fit it in a parking garage with both a low ceiling and short spaces. You will realize that parking spaces in parts of NoVA are physically smaller than those in Harrisonburg. A 3/4-ton truck is very useful and I want one myself, but I can see you ending up DDIng whatever you buy (given I was in your Miata boat back in 2012) and a GM 2500 will not be the best or most pleasant option.

Jake, how is driving yours? A short bed 2500hd is the same length give or take a few as your truck is.
I really don't ever plan to put a roll bar on the Miata. I'm buying the truck first then deciding later to keep or sell the Miata after the dust settles.

It's a pain in the dick unless I'm on the highway. Parking lots are the biggest annoyance, I have to back in most places and it often sticks out even with being backed up as far as possible. It's tall enough (the FX4 sits a hair higher, at least mine does, vs a XLT or whatever) that most parking garages require careful consideration. Turning circle is pretty large.
It's easy to parallel park because I have a backup camera, but it's long enough that finding a spot in Arlington or DC is rare. Go go gadget E46.
I love love love the usefulness of mine, it looks great and drives well for my needs. But as my daily driver, it's pretty big. The Yukon was a short wheelbase and infinitely easier to park places around NoVA/DC.

My brother's buddy bought a King Ranch Crew Cab F150 and lives in Arlington. The truck stuck out literally twice the length of the parking spot in his apartment's garage :lol: That truck didn't last long, maybe a month before he traded it

Don't forget all those damn columns in underground parking garages. It's a tight fit with the 4Runner and I can't imagine trying to go around in a full size truck. I would totally vote the V8 4Runner. Check for rust, do the SAIS bypass, and just drive the damn thing. Go limited if you can for leather, heated seats, JBL, backup camera, blah blah.
OR the latest craze is grabbing the Lexus GX470. Same exact vehicle as V8 4Rnner, but usually pampered by mom's and not impossible to find with reasonable miles.

Funny you should bring up the GX470. I saw one on the highway yesterday with some beefy all terrains and said to the wife "that is really cool." She just looked at me puzzled and went back to her phone.

Cross shopped them when looking at the LR4 and been trying to find a clean white on black one for my buddy for quite a while. They are very expensive for the mileage but built like tanks. I love the look.

Wow, that Lexus is sweet. I honestly flip back and forth between wanting a 4Runner and a pickup every day. I'm not sure if I could deal without having an open bed. I haul a lot of dirty things around.

Don't forget that a 2500 series truck will ride a lot different compared to a 1500 series. For a driving standpoint, it makes a difference. Like Jake and others have said and I've experienced with my Tundra, big trucks are great on the highway, until it's time to park it.

Well, she's gone. A guy approached me to trade for a TJ Wrangler and I seriously considered it. I think Jake and Joey have gotten tired of talking me down from financial suicide so often, so when I mentioned this trade, I got a "GO FOR IT!" from Jake. Of course I had to defy him, so I turned the guy down. It turns out this person really wanted my truck, so he dumped his Jeep and I offered to hold the Tacoma for him until he got the money for it. In the 4 days I held the Tacoma, I probably had 3-4 times the amount of people contact me about it than contacted me in the 3 weeks prior. It was pretty nerve wracking turning this many people down while holding out for this mystery guy. I ended up meeting him and chatting with him quite and bit and realizing he was pretty chill. Friday morning he texted me a picture of a pile of money and said he'd be over later to pick up the truck. We signed the papers and off he went.
He's a younger guy who goes to VT and knows people in CCVT so I don't think I've seen the truck for the last time. He's also promised to keep me updated on its progress. So far he's already repainted the skids, replaced all of the cross threaded studs, restored the head lights, and started a million other projects. Hopefully he can turn this truck into what I always dreamed it could be. Either way, I'll either get him to post the updates here or I'll post them myself. I don't think I'm emotionally ready to let it go completely.
