Re: Mountain Bikes - Ginger - 12-08-2011 Nice bike, Scotty. I rarely, if ever, mountain bike anymore, but RJ should be able to offer you some good advice on tire choice. [I'll save him the trouble: Continental Mountain Kings.] The whole dual-springy thing really puts a damper on explosive climbing power, but you get rewarded for staying in your seat and pedaling smoothly. I've heard that the Candys have a propensity for self-destruction, so you may want to be ready with another pair to go on sooner rather than later. I stay away from Eggbeater variants [in favor of XTRs], but I did mention that I don't really ride mountain bikes anymore, right? ... now if you want to bring a road bike out to play... Re: Mountain Bikes - .RJ - 12-08-2011 Mountain kings are great for the leafy, loose, shitty trail surfaces that you get in fall and winter. Continental has had some pretty big QC issues this year with the 'new' mountain king tire, I have just abandoned them until I have reliable info that they've fixed their problems.... Maxxis Ardents are supposed to be a pretty good alternative, or if you can find them on sale somewhere the Schwalbe nobby nic, they're a bit spendy at full price. If you want fast summer tires I've been really happy with the Maxxis Ikon, but on a bike with that much travel you probably want something with more volume. Re: Mountain Bikes - .RJ - 12-08-2011 Sunglasses over the straps. Why? It is because it is. I've had good luck with some Smith and Tifosi glasses also. Re: Mountain Bikes - ScottyB - 10-22-2013 anyone planning to check this new Snowshoe trail out any time soon? Evan? Pete? http://www.dirtragmag.com/webrag/first- ... jump-trail
Re: Mountain Bikes - Evan - 10-22-2013 Its about time they added an easy(er) trail on the western slope! i watched some runs on video. looks fast and a lot of fun. Good warmup for the ninja bob and powerlines jump trails. 2nd summer in a row I havent ridden a chairlift Hard to find the time with the little one.
Re: Mountain Bikes - PDenbigh - 10-23-2013 Bryce has some awesome downhill trails now too. I'm up for hitting those with you guys. I still do the six-pack downhills most Fridays around the GW national forest/Harrisonburg/Staunton area. Re: Mountain Bikes - V1GiLaNtE - 10-23-2013 I'd be down for snowshoe or Bryce on a Saturday. It would be a nice mixup from my usual SS XC ride. Re: Mountain Bikes - DavidL - 10-23-2013 Snowshoe might be a little cold/snowy this weekend... Re: Mountain Bikes - V1GiLaNtE - 10-24-2013 DavidL Wrote:Snowshoe might be a little cold/snowy this weekend... You can always layer up.. Layering down.. ehh not so much..At least in public..whilst riding my bike. Re: Mountain Bikes - Evan - 10-24-2013 Downhilling is great when its chilly. all the armor you want to wear, and no heat stroke. Re: Mountain Bikes - PDenbigh - 10-25-2013 The local shop does Saturday rides at Bryce, BTW. Shenandoah Bicycle Company - fantastic guys. They're like the Ashby Arms of Harrisonburg.. But for bikes. Pretty much only buy from them when I'm in town. Knowledgeable, professional, and down right awesome. Re: Mountain Bikes - Steve85 - 10-25-2013 Bryce partnered with them to run the rental / repair shop for the bike park. Nice guys, very helpful. RE: Mountain Bikes - V1GiLaNtE - 04-15-2019 Reviving this ancient thread. Picked up a 2nd hand hardtail and have been riding regularly to much enjoyment. Busted a spoke 2 weeks ago, got the bike back, and just busted another one at the end of last week. Looks like one spoke has already been replaced. Time for a rebuild? RJ & Mike get your asses in here. RE: Mountain Bikes - .RJ - 04-15-2019 Take it to a bike shop and ask them to re-tension and true the wheel. Should be $50-60. They did that when I got it replaced last time. I had a full tune-up done as well as replace the spoke. Tune-up included truing the wheels. RE: Mountain Bikes - .RJ - 04-15-2019 Not just truing, re-tensioning. They need to relax ALL the tension on ALL the spokes, bring it back up to tension while destressing the spokes along the way. If they dont regularly build wheels from parts or some fucking high school kid says he'll fix it then take it elsewhere. alternatively, if the guy has a long beard and looks like a bike wizard you're in the right place. What is happening is that while the wheel may be true, the spoke tension is not even all the way around, so when you ride it the spokes get too loose and will break. I generally trust anybody who looks like they live in the woods with their bike... It's likely this wheel is on it's way out as my guess is the PO of the bike was a string bean and not a 200lb Clydesdale like myself. As a side note anybody have interest this spring/summer in running Mass'o'nutten or Bryce bike park? I've got an inkling to break my other arm in some epic downhill crash... JK.
