LOL. I always wondered about that. Its like Ferrari NA lost the paperwork on one or two of their 2 mil $ cars.

'93 FD street/track car - LS6 powered. Whole bunch of suspension doo-dads, f/r BBK, heads/cam/intake, $28k in California.

Pictures broken for anyone else?

Derp, you had to be a forum member. Fixed.

I can never get over what LSx swapped FDs go for. That one looks clean though. I dig it.

I did too until I realized just how much stuff has to be worked and modified to take an engine from a different manufacturer and get it to work properly and cleanly in another chassis. I had to go over my budget that I "ideally" set by almost $2k.

Don't even care about the title... love this car.

BMW people - how terrible are these really to live with? I read "BMW" and "V12" and get a nosebleed, but I've always found these dead sexy. Is the 840 any different?

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - Beej - 11-21-2013

If I'm not mistaken, the V12 in those things is two of the "baby 6" M20's (e30 motors) slapped together. As in, two of a lot of things. ECU's for sure, and I'm pretty sure MAFs, fuel pumps, TB's (not sure how they're sync'd, drive by wire maybe?), distributors...you get the picture. All held together with a whole lot of NOPE.

Admittedly, that's about as much as I know. Sounds scary enough to not research it further, and I've never known anyone that's owned one.

Sharp looking, though.

It's two M50's (the E36 six cylinder) not the M20. Otherwise BJ is right. Terrifying.

The 840's are just the M60 V8. Same motor as the E34 540 and E32 740. Pretty reliable overall. I'd say the 840 is the one to get if your bank account isn't $Unlimited.

No, it's 2 M20's. The M70 had single cams and 2 valves per cylinder:

The 850Csi (which this is not) had four cams, four valves per cylinder, but even that was kind of a unique beast, being essentially an M engine and all.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-22-2013

Wow...coincidence...

I was just speaking with Jake about these...what.. 2-3 days ago? The 6-speed manual is only available on 850ci/csi. The V12 is heavier and a bit more complicated, but apparently isn't "that" bad (if you dont mind E39 M5 maintenance money).

The V8 is just "easier". An E34 manual pedalset and transmission will fit the 840i/ci. It won't have that "special V12" goodness though.

I look at these about every other week. It was/is a top candidate when considering a new project that would have back seats. Always loved them and there is red one I see in Chantilly on occasion that is just gorgeous.

Ah right right, I got my years mixed up. I thought this V12 was the same V12 used in the later (E38) 750i's. Which it's not. But those were still SOHC motors. Argh.

I think what we're all getting at is that a BMW V12 is going to be ornery, weird, and probably kind of wonderful if you can stomach the maintenance costs. Otherwise, 840 it is.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - .RJ - 11-22-2013

The v12's were terrible. Everything about them - ECU's, cylinder liners, accessories.... all garbage. Even if you have a substantial maintenance budget.... good luck.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - Steve85 - 11-22-2013

That's what LS motors are for! I really want to do an LS7 in one of these but would have to settle for a modded LS1 or straight LS3. The V12 only made what like 340hp? What I don't know is how integrated the ECUs are to other systems but I'm guessing not too terribly much. Don't want to lose functionality of that spectacularly 90's integrated phone.

Re: Cool cars for sale that ain't yours! - Jake - 11-22-2013

Given that the 8's came out in what, 1991(?), I would think the ECU is fairly standalone. I know DJ was able to adapt the GM-to-BMW bits with relative ease, but IDK how similar the E36 and E31 chassis are in terms of wiring. The E36 might be a generation newer in development.

Take a look at dropping an EllisJuan into an E34 or E32 x40i. That's where you would find the most similarity.

I dont see why it would be a problem. I would hate to look over the wiring diagrams of an 850i with two ECUs, but I bet 90% of it could be stripped out within a couple minutes. The biggest problem is finding reliable wiring digrams. I drove myself up a wall with wiring diagrams since I did an OBD2 M3 sedan with OBD2 m3 automatic harness at the enigne with a 98 LS1 wiring harness/ECU.

It would have taken 20 minutes if I was smart enough to have started with an OBD1 car with manual harness and 99-02 LS1 wiring harness/ECU. Those are well documented and supported (though I did find conflicting things every now and then as well_.
