Honestly I just don't like the way they look at all. I probably wouldn't notice one if I saw it on the street. It just looks like any other Chevy sedan.

Take a look at the list of cars I've had before and guess which side of that I fall on. My M3 is what I would consider fairly understated, other than the really loud exhaust.

This is a great idea. Why do you want the E46 and Golf R? They are pretty much serving the same purpose. I would suggest something practical like an SUV or truck. You have the M3 for fun, does the daily really need to be that entertaining as well?

That's definitely something I haven't thought of. Cheaper than I would have guessed too. Although they are pretty heavy (3900 lbs)
The MK6 Golf R & S4 are just.... very different. The S4 feels much more 'grown up' if that makes sense. The interior, controls and fit & finish is a step above in the Audi. If you're looking at a Golf, a Mk7 w/ the performance package would be a better car than the Mk6 Golf R, IMO. If you are ready to buy now you can still buy a brand new one for $22-25k OTD, or $7-8k off sticker.

I test drove a MK6 GTI and didn't like it much. It was just kind of boring. The Golf R I drove was stock but even that was a big step. With a few mods it would be a really fun, comfortable daily driver.
I'm not a huge fan of the looks of the MK7's, but if I got one I would wait a few years and buy a used Golf R. Downpipe and a tune for one of those and they will run mid 11's.

A Golf R is more than practical enough for me. It's actually a good bit bigger than the subaru with the seats laid down in both. The E46 M3 and Golf R are extremely different cars even though they look sort of similar on paper. I'm not dead set on keeping the M3 though.
My parents live 30 minutes away if I really need to borrow a truck. I had the Xterra and I didn't mind it but there isn't really anything particularly appealing about an SUV when I can get a hatchback that does 95% of what an SUV does while getting better gas mileage and being a lot faster.

Alright, its time for y'all to entertain me in another bout of crippling indecision, hopefully followed up by another fruitless unicorn hunt, with a finale of buyer's remorse because thats how I seem to need to purchase cars.
I've gotten more interest in the 135 lately, so I'm hoping it sells soon. The plan this fall was to sell it and roll with 1 car, and we did do that all summer with the only car being the 135 plus my wife's scooter. Its great when the weather is nice and my wife either takes the metro to work or works from home. But now that it's winter its just been too useful/convenient to have the second car, but if I dont make a conscious effort to drive the 135 it gets driven about 4 times a month. Expensive lawn ornament.
So, the replacement is hopefully cheaper to buy, own and operate than the 135. Call it $10-15k. It should have 4 or 5 doors, leather seats and 3 pedals. Yes I'm a clutch using neanderthal, fight me. It should be fun to drive and get out of its own way. It should not be any more complicated or expensive to maintain than my E90. I am ok with that level of care and feeding. I'm less concerned about year/mileage, provided it's on the shallow end of its depreciation curve, remains reliable and I dont worry about my wife driving it back and forth to Richmond, because it will probably be used about 5k miles a year.
Initial thoughts:
- 8th gen Honda Civic Si 4 dr
- 7th gen VW GTI
- Acura TL Type-S although that may be getting a little old and hard to find in nice shape
- E90 sedan ticks all the boxes, but I dont want 2 of the same car
- Audi A3 or B8 A4
- I really have the hankering for a big sedan with a big honkin' engine, like an S6 or BMW E60 550i RWD+6MT, but I think that would bankrupt me
- Audi TT (I know its 2 doors, but I might be able to squeak that one through)

Or ATS? There are a couple of 2013/2014 ATS 2.0T manuals at the top of your price range. It was reviewed as having a phenomenal chassis.

I was looking for TL type s for a friend a few weeks ago and his budget of $10k was making it a little challenging but not out of the question. I think if you want to spend $15k you should be able to find one with less than 140k miles on it in pretty good shape.

Not that I think spending >$5000 on an E30 is a good idea, but you could definitely find a REALLY nice one for that. I spent $2400 on mine and I'm an idiot when it comes to finding good deals.
Is a new-ish WRX on within your budget here? I drove a 2016-2017 and it was really fun. Are the 2010s WRX still unreliable?

PSA: someone should buy a 2008-2017 Honda Accord EX-L Coupe with a 6-speed manual. 278hp 3.5 V-6, 28mpg highway, 5.6 0-60, sleeper as hell. Especially whoever it was that may be having their Forrester poop the bed and has parents wanting something "grown up". These things are awesome.
