Hello all,

I am running for the officer position of secretary for the 2016-2017 school year and hope you will all consider me when placing your vote.

A little bit about myself:
My name is Ryan Allen. I am currently a sophomore at JMU in pursuit of a B.S. in Geographic Science with a dual concentration in applied geographic information systems and environmental conservation, sustainability, and development. I also have a minor in humanitarian affairs. I am scheduled to graduate next year but plan to attend JMU for two more years to enjoy the college experience and community with the added pleasure of not having to take six classes a semester. I am a very sociable person with great organizational skills and like everything to be planned and organized in advance to minimize headache, frustration, and unforeseen consequences.

My automotive career began a while back when I lived in California due to my dad’s military career. The base allowed for me to ride and race dirt bikes which then led into my interest in cars once we moved to the east coast. I picked up my 86’ Camaro the summer after my first year of high school and that’s where the adventure began. The car has now been completely worked over with no bolt being left to itself. It currently sits with a ls1/4l60e awaiting a t56 swap when the finances allow it.

Why me?
I joined Madison Motorsports at the begging of this school year through coincidentally seeing a MM sticker on a white mustang of which peaked my interest. I did not know the club existed before this point and became highly interested. I am unsure of if this oversight was my own doing or if the clubs presence on campus was less than adequate at the time. Either way I hope to increase our outreach to the JMU and Harrisonburg communities.
I hope to bring an organizational and supportive presence to the club, which can allow the other officers to focus more on their responsibilities while allowing me to keep them and the club organized throughout the school year.
I have led class projects in nearly all of my classes and have been selected for program awards throughout my career. I pride myself on being timely, organized, and a leader for my fellow peers.

As far as improvements for the club, I am hoping to advocate the use of the google calendar and take a poll of who use it or would like to use it as a clear way to have everyone in the club on the same page for events, meetings, and any other club functions. I have been noticing that many of our less formal events such as cruises and meetings are more on the fly rather than organized. I feel that if we could schedule these in advance, alongside little afternoon cruises here and there, we could provide members with more of a heads up so that they could provide insight into the amount of people we can expect to show up. I also plan to provide a forum that will provide minutes for all classroom meetings so that those unable to attend will be able to know what was discussed.

The ideas stated above are merely the begging of what I hope to achieve in the position of secretary with Madison Motorsports. If anyone has any questions or concerns please let me know and I will answer promptly. The forum, email, phone, or Facebook messenger are all great ways to get in touch with me. 540-323-1782

P.S. I am going to be more active on the forums in the coming months seeing as the school load will lessen. Currently six class projects are providing constant work and stress, which will be alleviated soon.

Car People,

I’m announcing my run for President of MM for the 2016-2017 school year. I am a rising senior Intelligence Analysis Major, I have been in MM since freshman year, and hope to leave it in my senior year stronger and higher profile than when I joined. Even though I keep a low profile you can rest assured I have been watching very carefully and I believe there are serious points which need to be addressed if we want the club to reach its full potential. I have been to every possible event or meeting, which gives me a good perspective on the current state of affairs. I want to see MM grow with a more active membership, and consider how we present ourselves to prospective new members and the community at large through events and campus presence. I also have a substantially large garage, lots of tools, and access to a good bit of land where we could do bonfires, fish, etc. Just throwing that out there.

Policy points:

Retaining New Members
How many new members did we have at the first meeting, 35-50? Their enthusiasm level was incredibly high, as it is every year, and MM always does an excellent job of hyping up the club at Student Org Night. Why is excitement for the club so high? Because the people who join have an idealistic view of what a car club is. Like it or not, people want to be rice, people want to have stupid car conversations, and most importantly they want somewhere to go that isn’t a party where there are cars to gawk at and talk shit about. The number one reason a car person never returns to an MM meeting after the parking deck meet in the fall is we don’t deliver on that ideal.

What happened to Top Gear night? What happened to parking lot meetings? Also, I cannot remember a single time where we held a class or promoted an event that taught safe driving. Why say that “We are a club that promotes safe driving and discourages street racing” when we only pay it lip service? It’s fine for PR stuff for the University and whatnot, but why not actually do stuff like that? Host a meeting on driving techniques, rev matching, heel-toeing, maintenance, anything. But we should try and really live up to the slogan.

Track Participation
Alumni will probably hate me for this, but it’s the truth. The emphasis on track days as our thing needs to go on the back-burner, at least until we figure out how to make it more accessible. It is nearly impossible to get existing members out, not to mention a new member who is suddenly going to spend a weekend doing unspecified things with people he doesn’t know at a place they’ve never heard of or been to. I have been to VIR and Summit approximately once. I actually really enjoyed my time at both places, but it was largely because I had established connections within the club with which I could spend my time; it is still a massive time and trust commitment that could use more attention.

If we are going to say that track days are something feasible that new members will go to, it has to be planned better. As President, I am willing to take the time to go over with the other officers, alumni, and committed members on how to restructure our track planning. It IS fun, but largely inaccessible to people. Alumni involvement in this area needs to be significantly higher or reworked to be more accommodating to the MMers who show up and are not driving.

Cruises
Sad to say it, but many cruises come off as poorly planned. We need to put more thought into how we approach the idea of a cruise. A jolly good jaunt up 33 at the speed limit, with a possible stop at the top and 10 minutes of meandering around at the lake and a ride home is I believe wasting the opportunity. We should be viewing it as less of a trip and more of a journey. Maybe a big weekend cruise around the state to scenic spots, maybe a track event, to a big car meet in Richmond or D.C., etc. A little hooning doesn't hurt either, it just takes some personal responsibility on the part of the hooner.

Communication
This club has historically been pretty bad about communicating stuff in a timely manner. I believe that combined with a solid PR Secretary (plug for Matt Wolford) and a better planning infrastructure, we can fix this. Additionally, the Facebook chat is not a good place to announce things. I turned it off months ago and I know many others have too. There should at least be an official Facebook chat that is only used for official club communications, and an optional one for random stuff. Having an active agenda that is updated on the front page of the website or somewhere easily accessible on the forum will help drive member involvement in the forum, and when combined with emails, Facebook chat and the Facebook page, and maybe even a twitter account to announce things and to post reminders, we can hopefully improve in this area.

Additionally, we need to be in constant communication with JMU, and should be constantly pushing the boundaries of what we consider is acceptable on University property. We may end up surprised by the amount of support we can receive from the University if we engage them in a professional manner and keep going up the chain of command until we get what we want or hit the absolute barrier. Has anyone ever inquired with JMU Police about doing an event with them? There are probably a good number of car enthusiasts in the JMU PD. It’s all about dialogue, and currently our only interactions with the powers that be at JMU are when we beg for something. Engage them immediately at the start of the fall semester, and don’t stop talking to them until the summer.

Autocross
Autocrosses are great, and we should be attempting to organize our own or some variant in whatever capacity that incorporates a spirit of competition. Just set up a slalom with some cones, have a serious talk with JMU about what our limits are at the college and in parking lots. Find an empty field or parking lot to hoon around in. It doesn’t even have to be an autocross, but it has to get butts in seats, and it has to be fun. We need to show the initiative to plan Motorsport events, not just put it on our shirts.

Car Show
The car show is awesome, and every year it gets better. I think we could make it even better than it has been through planning starting at the beginning of the year. Communicate with some big name vendors, lock down a date with JMU within the first month. Talk to local radio and TV stations to see what they can do to help promote the show. If we show JMU that it is a serious event, they will be increasingly likely to give us monetary or just administrative support in the form of letting us use the entirety of the convo lot. Show JMU that Madison Motorsports can be a PR juggernaut to elevate the status of the University and I strongly believe they will be more than willing to help out.

As a club, we need to make sure that we are not taking a new member’s money without putting it to good use. We should expand the public profile of the club to really make MM a leader at both JMU and in the Shenandoah Valley. Alumni, you are integral to the process with your connections and contributions; for those who are willing, I would love to have you more involved in the process. Let’s put that legendary forum nagging to good use. I'm confident that given the opportunity to lead MM during 2016-17 I can increase Active membership, generate positive publicity, and most importantly, get the club back to its roots: be the only place at JMU that allows car enthusiasts, to be car enthusiasts.

Thank you.

My fellow MMers,

For those of you who do not know me or have not met me, I’ll start off with just a bit about myself. My name is James Watkins and I am 22 years old. As many navy brats do, I grew up in the 757 (Chesapeake, Virginia for those of you who know where that is). At JMU, I am an engineering major with a minor in music. Next year will be my fifth year in Harrisonburg, and my fourth with Madison Motorsports.

My initial interest in cars was kicked off in high school after my parents helped me buy my first car, a shitty 99 Eclipse (non-turbo). I knew nothing about cars at this time and wanted it because it looked cool. But I took pride in taking it from the busted up piece it started as to the decently nice car it was when I sold it (two engine changes and one trans swap later, DSM lyfe yo!) Last summer, inspired by MM members and alumni to become more active in motorsports, I picked up my 99 Miata, which I have been actively driving the wheels off of since.

I joined MM in my sophomore year, and have been an active member for the last three years. I have been a part of most of what we have offered, going to track days, karting, attending meetings, club dinners, being active on the group chat (and forums to a lesser extent, mostly creepin  ), helping with the car show, driving in autocross, and even setting up a cruise or two. This club has succeeded in doing exactly what it says on the box and gotten me involved in and excited about motorsports, by offering me opportunities that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. As a bonus, I’ve made some awesome friends along the way with both students and alumni. I want to give back for all the good MM has done for me, and to help this club continue to succeed in its mission, which is why I am running for the office of treasurer!

The last year has been my favorite as part of MM. I think that we did a whole lot of things right, and this next year we will be even better as we continue to refine what has been done. As always, there are still some problem areas we face as a club, and the one I am going to emphasize here is member retention and participation. I think that a possible underlying cause of this issue may be the fact that we students are just not a very close group of friends as a whole. We have parties and cruises maybe once a month as essentially our only (club supplied) opportunity to hang out outside of a classroom or a big event like karting. If the club can provide more opportunities for members to have time to connect with each other, it may improve member retention and participation. To do this, we don’t need more big events or parties, but more casual hang-outs/wrench days/club dinners (heck, maybe even some ice breakers), particularly early in the semester to get new members connected while they are still exploring various clubs and deciding what they want to stay invested in. If we can improve our cohesiveness as a club, perhaps people will look forward to things like spending a weekend at the track with a bunch of their close friends.

Another issue that has been nagging me is how the club has gone about conflict resolution, particularly with alumni. From what I have seen there tends to be a lot of unnecessary hostility thrown around when officer decisions conflict with alumni opinions. Now I know that both sides of these issues do not hold grudges due to these exchanges, and I am definitely not trying to cast blame anywhere, but there are much more constructive ways to re-frame these conflicts and learn from them, rather than having back and forth banter. I hope that I might play a role in facilitating these exchanges to make life easier and threads shorter for everyone. (There may be some other factors at play here, but that's an issue for another time)

As treasurer, my main responsibilities will be with managing the club’s money, and all that comes along with that. I have experience with this as I manage my engineering capstone team’s rather large grant. I will also have the responsibility to be on top of apparel, karting, and all other club expenses. I can guarantee that those tasks will be dealt with promptly and efficiently. I don’t really know what else to say about this besides that I won’t let the club go broke!

Thanks for reading, and officer or not, I look forward to my last year as a student with Madison Motorsports, it’s going to be a great one.

Hey everyone! Man this year flew by, and I’m happy to say it was one of the best years, largely due to being the treasurer this year in MM.

This year was a great success, and I would like to thank all the officers that helped me this year. Taylor, Matthew, and Sam helped me throughout the year, and helped me learn about running the club more than ever. We tried to think outside the box this year, and do events that we never had before, which I believe was both fun and a great building block for next year.

Next year, I would like to run for the office of VP. My experience as an officer this past year has opened my eyes to what it takes to run this club, and learning/working with a team to coordinate something awesome (like the car show). I believe that coming from being the treasurer, I can bring some important things I’ve learned, and can also help the new treasurer with both the apparel order and keeping the bank account full of money for events.

There are a few things I would like to see happen next year, and this stems from things I have seen this past year, both as an officer and a regular member:

1)	More Top Gear nights- these are cheap and very easy to do. I would be happy to hold them at my apartment, if people are willing to drive out to North. This also keeps club members active, and can give us all a chance to hangout. I would be happy to pick people up and take them back to campus, especially for people who don’t have wheels at JMU.

2)	NASA and Track Days- again this year, I feel like we did much better getting people to the track and to auto-x. These are important as they help current students connect with aluMMni, as well as teaching them about NASA and getting them to understand how everything works. We pushed the track this year, and more people showed up. I think we should reserve a van to head down to VIR this year, as I have never been (and need to go!).

3)	More Eastside Dragway- I for one love the easy $20 we pay Friday nights at Eastside to go drag racing. You can run all night till they shut down, and you can bring whatever you drive. When we went in the fall, the turnout was huge, and everyone had a fantastic time.

4)	Apparel- A soft and quality t-shirt will be offered from the start, and offer more unique items that people want.

5)	Auto-X- I like Taylor’s idea about getting the college solo back to the form it was years ago. The event sounds like fun, and with the size of MM and the surrounding areas car clubs (CCVT, etc.) there is no reason we couldn’t coordinate and make this happen. I have some friends at VT who I know are into this, and will be working with them to make it better than ever.

6)	Increasing Member Size- always we are looking for new members. I wish I could count how many times I was told “oh! I didn’t know you guys were a club!” To remedy this, I plan on making sure we send out a mass email the first couple weeks of school, as well as work with other officers to help spread the word about MM on campus. Also, a key part of that is getting the apparel order in ASAP so we can get our MM swag out to our members so they can wear them around campus.

7)	Car show- What a fantastic event! I believe we had so much success due to our sponsors. I would like to get more this next year, and make the car show even bigger and better as always. This past year was a great building block, and we can use it to add on for the future shows. Also, the pairing with the auto-x is just too perfect, and officers should coordinate with Ray to try to keep that a staple of the show as well.

8 )	More communication- the Facebook chat is great for keeping all of the current students in contact with each other, and even some aluMMni who have joined and keep track of what we are up to.

9)	Wrench days- we all wrench on our cars. Why can’t we just pick a day at least once or twice a month and just work on some cars and hangout together? This year multiple times I have had MM’ers ask me to use my garage, and I am all for it! I would be happy to do that again this year, and get people to come help or hangout, as I know many of my funniest and most memorable experiences in MM have be us average mechanics working to fix or upgrade our cars. (*cough* Matthew Walker clutch install at Dave’s *cough*).

10)	Winter- Winter is always a down time in MM’s yearly cycle, as no one tends to do anything with their cars. I believe this has changed, however, with the addition of the Refrigerator Bowl (which I ran- FANTASTIC beginner event) Auto-X and of the amount of off-road guys we have had join in recent times. I would love to get some MMers to go on an off-road trip, and contact the local groups to see if we could hitch a ride or coordinate something with them. I know Taylor and Colton know people like that, so that would be a great opportunity if we could set something like that up.

Overall, I feel like this year for me was a fantastic learning experience, and I feel as if it has prepared me to take the next step up to VP, as well as help new officers in their tasks. The list above is just a start, and I hope next year will be bigger and better than ever!

Thank you so much for reading, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or shoot me a message on Facebook!

Introduction
Hey everyone, for those of you who I have not yet met, I am Matt Wolford and I am currently a Sophomore as a Kinesiology Major (I'm really a junior in terms of credits, life is confusing). I am a first year transfer student from Radford, and I am really finding my place here at JMU in my second semester. I felt my first semester was very overwhelming, and i did not have much time to enjoy the finer things in life as my adjustment to a new place took some getting used to. Now that i have found time for social experiences, I have been more involved with MM my second semester here, and I feel that these last two months of school have been my absolute happiest. These past two MM events (Karting and the MM Car show+Autocross) have opened my eyes as to what I was missing first semester. All of the guys in MM have made me feel like just another one of the guys, and I can't thank them enough for welcoming me into the MM family with open arms. I am running for the position of Public Relations/Secretary, and I feel that this role really does fit me perfectly. I am a very outgoing, organized, passionate person, and get along with almost everyone I meet. When i find something I enjoy, I am very passionate about it and put my whole heart into it.

What My Goals as Public Relations Officer Would be
As the PR/secretary Officer, I know I will be in charge of all the email, note taking, and things of that sort. I am very organized and feel that this position fits my personality well. I plan to get the Madison Motorsports name out there and be a positive representation of what MM stands for. I have set a goal to increase the size of MM, because i believe that students need to realize what they're missing out on. This club is a huge opportunity for fun and meaningful social experiences, as well as a means to learn more about automobiles and motorsports. Along with the increase in member size, I want to increase the amount of attendance to MM events, whether it is a car show or weekly meetings. I want bi-weekly MM car meets to be a thing. I think letting off some steam and talking to cool guys/girls about cars, life, relationships, whatever it may be, it is a good way to relieve stress. As well as building the bonds between MM members, i want to teach the new members the goal of MM. Everyone thinks of car guys as a bunch rapscallions recklessly speeding around town, and I want people to know that we teach safe driving here at MM. I want people to know who we are, and I want to encourage students to join the greatest group of guys (and gals) on campus, regardless of whether they have a cool car or not. I also plan to talk to companies in order to develop relationships, and hopefully be able to get some sort of sponsorships for the club. I believe that a PR Officer needs to develop relationships with those who are not apart of JMU, and I want to increase the amount of support we have from organizations outside of JMU.

How I Plan to Increase Member Size
I absolutely love film and photo, and I plan to bring my video and photo skills to use and make Advertisements, Commercials, Promotional Videos, and more, in order to get students to recognize who we are. I think a big part of this club living on is engaging new students, and encouraging them to join MM, in order to make their experience at JMU more enjoyable. The more people we can get to join the club, the more opportunities we will have to do fun things. I know some people were talking about possibly doing 2 karting trips next year, and if we can somehow encourage more students (increase member #'s by 10-15, even 20) to join, then we can find the means to make fun events happen more often. I also believe that an increase in member size is based on the happiness of MM's current members. If members are happy with how MM is operating, then they will be more likely to encourage people to join our awesome group of gear heads. We already have multiple forms of social media, but i want to be very involved with them in order to gain a big following. I want schools from other states to know who we are, and wish they had a club like ours.

My Role as Public Relations Officer
I believe that 2016-2017 will be a big year for MM, but only if we want it to be. The goals for '16-'17 are not going to be achieved single handedly by myself. I am going to have to work hand in hand with all the Officers, as well as MM members, in order to help this club succeed to new heights. I want to be a positive influence on this club, and encourage all members to shoot me ideas any time. If a member wants to try out a new event of some sort, I want to help them make their ideas become a reality. Members are just as important as the Officers who run the club. In order to keep students coming back, we want to make sure everybody is enjoying their experience to the highest level. As PR Officer I also want to be active on social media and the internet in order to keep our name out there. The Internet is the most useful resource for success in today's electronic era. I want to make E-Flyers, send out emails, and post on different forms of social media in order to engage people with MM. I also believe that JMU faculty need to be involved with MM somehow, but in a different way. I think we need to show to the JMU administration that we are a very responsible group, and our choices that we make are all in an effort to give students a safe and meaningful experience. This group is not a means to be reckless and teach you that doing clutch dumps through Harrisonburg is cool. This group is to give students the opportunity to let out the lead foot when it is LEGAL (at the track), as well as to build bonds with awesome people and teach them about cars.

Means of Revenue and Fundraising
I hope to start some sort of fundraisers in order to provide more money for events that we may hold. I know this might be the role of other officers, but i believe that officers need help with some things as they cannot do everything themselves. I know restaurants such as Chipotle and Buffalo Wild Wings work with JMU organizations and will give a percentage of profits for fundraisers. I think that the best way for this club to succeed is to have every members helping hand in any way they can. If we have fundraisers, we need to get the word out by posting flyers, sending emails, and telling people in our classes about them. We can also try selling new products to members, or even students. I think apparel is a great way to raise money, as well as some sort of personalized item. I think we can all agree that something with our name on it feels more special. We could sell jackets with our last name embroidered, or maybe mechanics shirts with our name and MM logo. I think these items are practicals items that make sense, and will be something that someone would want to wear and keep forever.

Summary/TLDR
Overall, I hope to bring fresh ideas to MM, as well as a positive attitude and image to the club. I want to bring a new influx of students to MM, as we are losing many seniors that are near and dear to everybody. I think that this year's upcoming senior class is just as special, and I want to give them a year of MM that they will always remember. I think I can help bring more revenue and members to MM, as well as engage members to make more events happen. I hope to create many videos, take many photos, and develop a great number of connections as the PR/Secretary Officer. 2016-2017 will a be a big year for MM, and I want to have a helping hand in any way possible. I believe that my enthusiasm and drive (no pun intended) will help MM succeed, and I hope that i get to meet as many new people this upcoming year as i did in the past few months. I've really only been apart of MM for a short period of time, but I truly feel that MM is already a part of me and I want to help this club reach it's maximum potential.

I know this page is really long, but i really did have a lot of ideas that i don't think could all be expressed in one simple page. If anybody has any questions as to how I will meet my goals, please feel free to ask.

Thanks for reading-
I believe that my enthusiasm and drive (no pun intended) will help MM succeed, and I hope that i get to meet as many new people this upcoming year as i did in the past few months.

Hello all.

First off let me say that I am a junior here at JMU. I drive the 1999 red Mustang GT. This is my second year in Madison Motorsports along with my second year at JMU. I will be at JMU two more years once this semester is over. With that being said, I do have experience being in MM and the curiosity and desire to learn more about it.

I'm running for secretary because Madison Motorsports is the only club I have been apart of while I've been at JMU and it's the best one on campus, right? I've learned so much along with experiencing so many great things while in Motorsports and I think I can add value to the club by taking office. I don't know all of the details behind the car show and the autocrosses, but what better way to learn and find out than to take office? I plan on working with the other officers in the club to make next year the best one yet!

Being in the club for two years I have learned some of the ropes of being in MM. I would like to take it a step further and become an officer in MM. To make a long story short, I fell in love with MM at student organization night my first semester here over a year ago. I want to expand the club so that we can have more awesome members to indulge in some mind-blowing activities. I'm excited for many more fond memories with the awesome members with their awesome cars.

I'd like to thank all of the current officers for all they've done in MM to help make it as enjoyable as possible for all of the members and alumni.

If elected, I would do my absolute best to give 100% effort to do my duties as secretary.

Hey everyone!

First off, I would like to state that this will possibly be the shortest thread I've ever posted. Hopefully with minimal whining about regretted purchases of cheap, high mileage cars.

Secondly, I would like to start off with some things I have accomplished this year as VP. I originally planned to run as President last year, but I asked Sam to come back and teach me everything he knew about being president. Doing so, I shadowed him this year just about every step of the way so I would know exactly what to do this year. In doing so, I took over many duties to usual President would.

This year, we had our highest turn out ever at Student Org night and had right around 50 people show up to our interest meeting. I have held many social gatherings, at my expense, for the club at my house including parties, cookouts, and semi-formal events. We have had lots of cruises and even went on a mega-cruise at the beginning of the year. I pushed extremely hard to get lots of current students to Turducken as well as the College Solo and I feel as though we had a good turn out as well as pushing for new apparel items this year including our first ever screen printed Hoodies and the long lost Miata design, as well as ballin' flex fit hats. After that, we all busted our butts to bring you the biggest MM car show in history as well as a full field at the karting event. Next year, we may possibly have the largest amount of MM money to spend on club activities ever.

Lastly, this is what I hope to accomplish this year.

I've spoken with Jake and other alums over the last three years in order to find out what made other years so great. I will try my best to get students to the track, starting with Hyperfest and moving on to regular track weekends. I will be e-mailing NASA to see if we can work out something where we can guarantee student attendance. This is priority.

I also want to try Karting twice. It will be tricky, but with a new indoor facility opening at Summit, I think it is highly possible.

Also, I've spoken with Jake and will talk with Ray to get the College solo back to its roots. I will contact every school I can think of and I will make this event huge!

Lastly, my goals will be the same as every year. I will make this club be known campus wide and we will have the most active students ever. MM will be THE club to be in because of its great cause and awesome members. We will get people involved in motorsports and into car culture like never before. This, of course, is not an exhaustive list of goals of mine, as I wanted to keep this short. I also know some of you worry that I can't serve the club as well as I could because of my crazy work schedule, but I promise I will continue to contribute every hour of my life not in class or at work to this club.
