Anyone have experience with color match spray cans? I just picked up a front lip and want to paint it to match my car. I looked on www.paintscratch.com, but it seemed kinda pricey. Then I found www.automotivetouchup.com which was a little cheaper. Any places to get a good deal on paint? Will 2 cans of base and 2 cans of clear be enough or overkill? I was thinking at least 3 coats of base and 3-4 coats of clear so it will look pretty good for being a rattle can job. Obviously it needs to be scuffed up and then rubbed with alcohol for prep. Anything I'm overlooking or just general tips?

ABS plastic I think. Just an ebay special, nothing fancy.

Wash it with mild dish detergent and water, scuff it, wash it with soap and water again, rinse it.
Then spray a coat of adhesion promoter on it. Available at any paint shop. Otherwise the paint will flake off. May take a month, may take a year, but it will come off.
Than spray base coat and clear. 2 of each would probably do it, but I'd be inclined to pick up 3 to make sure.

Krylon had a pretty awesome spray bomb for plastic at one point. I used it on some parts for my white car and the paint still looks good.

Did the paint match or did you just wing it?

Well it was black, so pretty easy to match - but yes, the black matched the other black

Get all imperfections out first because paint only amplifiers, it doesn't hide. Adhesion promoter as said. Do light coats. And with the clear, you may want to do the first coat light so it looks rough then let of flash and go back and do a second heavy coat. Don't spray it outside unless its warm of course. Do not touch with bare hands between cleaning and spraying

If you're in Harrisonburg, go to E&M. They'll mix you up a can based on the paint color code you provide. One can should be able to do a whole lip if you're doing light coats.
That's what I did for the interior and engine bay of my Z.
thanks for the help guys. Waiting to see if a friend's girlfriend's brother who paints would be willing to do it for cheap. Otherwise I'll be ordering up some cans and looking for a warm indoor spot to paint in.
