This is always a subject for contention, but I'm just curious to see what you guys are using in your cars. I'm in the midst of an enormous order of 300ZX parts from Courtesy Nissan, and for the moment I was just going to stick with the OEM air filters for $8 apiece rather than the K&N set for $100. Discuss.

OEM fo sho! I really don't think the K&N drop-ins are all that and a slice of cheese... The bottleneck is the stock airbox IMO.

i have a K&N cone on the intake in my accord. i dont know if the gains are that amazing because of it, but i do like the fact that it's re-usable and probably filters better.

save your money, get oem and save for the JWT PopCharger kit. A kid that use to go to JMU said that his stillen exhaust and JWT PopChargers with ECU added 90+ whp. this was from him though, can't verify the claims.

some don't like K&N on EFI cars b/c the oil from the filter can get on the MAF wire and cause problems. Having said that I have a K&N and have never had a problem, I should probably clean it thought...

Ummm, no to the Pop Charger. I'm interested in staying as close to stock as possible at the moment, with the only exception being modifications for reliability or replacement of broken stock parts. The car is plenty fast as it is - the drivers (Jess and I) need to learn how to manage that before making it even faster. But we digress - more about air filters!
I say go with an OEM replacement. K&N Filters are over-rated.

in that case, mike kojima wrote that nissan filters aren't that restrictive, and filter well. KN drop in the box isn't worth the money.
p.s. but you will be putting More mothafuckin' b00st!!!!!

do the cheap OEM route for now. That will suit your current needs just fine.
K@N to the max, yo!
And yes...gaining 100hp on that car is so easy it is almost a joke.

After looking at the intake tract in the nose of the Z - I bought a JWT POP Charger. For unrelated reasons, I took the air box out and then saw how the intake actually works. It sucks ass and I can't think of a good reason to do it the way that Nissan did. The intake actually draws air from both fenderwells, collects it right under the nose panel, sends it through the MAF sensor, then splits it again to go to the turbos. Re - tarded. For those that don't know - the POP Charger (and i have no idea what POP means) is just a bracket and a big-ass cone filter that sits just below the MAF box. Much simpler, and good for a few horses I'm sure.
Of course, with this mod, and ripping out the emissions crap - I'll need a different ECU program. And that'll probably turn up the boost a bit. 400 horsepower, here we come

I think I know what its called the "POP" charger.....
See if you can get anything other than a K&N filter on those things..... the filtration on them sucks ass.

It's not a K&N branded filter - although it does look awfully similar:

If its one of those clean and oil jobs... run away. Depending on oil to filter out intake air is like banging maeng's mom w/ a busted rubber.

got anything to back this up? There's oilable filters out there that are said to filter BETTER than paper. Sure, the K&N's aren't one of them, but man, they sure have been around for a LONG time, and I don't see people killing their engines with them. Not to mention the fact that oilable filters are often used in heavy equipment, off road racing, stuff that's exposed to massive amounts of dirt and crap.... why have they been using them for so long?
On the other hand, I saw a BMW engine head full of silt after using a high flow foam filter, something that never happened when we were using K&N's..... :|

The POP charger is more then just a filter and a bracket. It also includes a velocity stack. POP stands for performance optimized product or some crap like that. Its just what JWT came up with to call there products.
-Mike
The velocity stack is down the center of the filter element, correct?
Edit - Yes, it is.
