Can my jeep haul this trailer?

The guy that I am renting the trailer from keeps saying "As long as you have a class 3 hitch you're good to go"

Well, my jeep has a 2" receiver, and my hitch specifically has stamped on it 5,000lb, which is class 3, right?

It will do. Jeep will struggle a bit but itll do it. As long as you havent put any lifting kits or huge tires on the jeep. The rear WILL sag pretty badly if its the original suspension from 1997.

BTW might want to check up on the hitch weight and be careful (and im not talking about gross rate).

It'll pull it, but it won't be happy about it. I'm with DJ, def. check the tonque weight of the trailer cause it's gonna make yoru jeep squat. Be prepared to deal with a little bit of sway since it's both taller and longer than your jeep and has solid sides. Give your cooling and braking systems a good once over before you leave too.

Edit: Also, check to see what size ball the trailer is made for. It'd suck to show up with a 2" ball and it require a 2 5/16.

Well, I think I will probably go this time with dad's silverado, because i think my hitch doesnt have the right kind of plug, and i dont have an EBC installed in the jeep. But for future reference how do I "prove" the jeep is able to tow this? I think i mentioned this to the guy before, and he was all WHARGARBL on me about a jeep not being good enough....is the 5000lb for JUST the trailer, which that site shows is 4617, or am I looking for a total EVWR of jeep + trailer below 5,000?

20 ft long and 3500+ lbs?

I would run as far away as I possibly can. The jeep is too short, too softly sprung, too underpowered for this sort of thing to tow it any further than across town at 25mph. The trailer will sway all over the place and the jeep will wander on the highway with no weight on the front wheels.

i think that might be a little much for an XJ to handle.

its 5klbs max with the auto trans... you'll need to make sure you have a good trans cooler set up if you are going to try to max it out. also they can pull the weight, they just dont stop well with it so really check the health of the brakes before you try it.

The trailers dry weight is 3462, it's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is 4617. 4617 is the maximum the trailer can weigh including cargo, water, yadda yadda. Class III hitches can be rated up as high as 6000lbs but the maximum the jeep is rated for is 5000lb. So as long as your not filling the Jeep up with 300 or 400lbs of gear you should be within the weight limit to pull that. But if you've got the option of a v8 pickup to tow it with I'd go with that.

I will say that the one time I towed something with my Jeep (Jeffs old jeep)....it sucked. And that was only like 2800lbs.

Just because its rated for something doesnt mean its a good idea.

Yeah, the truck is what i was leaning towards, but the thought crossed my mind it might be nice to get slightly better MPG and not have the hassle of borrowing the truck. I towed one of those like 10' closed uhaul trailers to get my motorcyle from PA, and it seemed to be fine for that, but that's all ive ever towed with it.

Damn, I need to break down and just buy a truck =\

you wont get better mileage out of the I6 towing that kinda weight... its going to be down around 7mpg at best.

Certaintly not. I just said that so if the guy at the camper place gave him any more flack he could point out that the GVWR for that trailer is actually less than his is rated for. But I wouldn't tow that any farther than across town with the Jeep.

So according to this guys first page on the site, http://roadtriprentals.biz/ , "Rates Include Insurance"

Does anyone know how this works renting/borrowing a trailer from my insurance point of view? Kind of a sticky situation I guess - I am renting a trailer, and borrowing dads truck to haul it.

I always was under the impression that vehicles that are insured are insured no matter the driver. I THINK liability for any damage caused by the actual trailer itself would be covered from my/my dads insurance, so I assume the guy saying "Rates Include Insurance" means that it covers the damage to the trailer itself, right?

Insurance companies treat your trailer as part of your liability insurance under your "tow vehicle". However, it will not cover comprehensive. You would have to get insurance for that.
