One Car - Three Generations

1967 911S Targa

My grandfather went to Germany to buy it new and went through the hassle of getting it imported into the US. My dad inherited it when he died in 1991 and intended to pass it down to me. My first DE was in this car at a rainy Summit Point and everyone told my dad he was insane for ever putting it on the track. It was only ever driven by a handful of people and after nearly 45 years it has less than 1,000 miles per year on the clock. In stereotypical, sexist Italian-American fashion, a woman had never been behind the wheel.

Unfortunately, it become a nuisance over the last couple years because it never ran right, even after repeated trips to a mechanic, and there was always a real possibility of it leaving the driver stranded. He listed it for what he thought was an obscene price a month or two ago and some guy in Germany wanted to pay it. So... it's gone.

The unfortunate thing is my grandfather had 4 cars when he died - '67 911, '79 318, '8x 924 GT and a Porsche Elva - and none of them are around. I would have liked to keep one, but it just wasn't meant to be.

I'm partial to the picture of my dad in a suit. It looks like it belongs in a Porsche brochure or something.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

My dad packed it up on a trailer today, where it'll be headed to Newark to be loaded on a shipping container. Ironically, although not surprising, this is the same port it came in the country 40+ years ago.
