Project wrong wheel drive
#1
I posted up my intro thread a while ago. Link to my intro. I figured that it was time to make a "build thread"

The car as it sits has:
Koni yellow sp3 adjustable shocks
Ground control adjustable coilover sleeves
Extended top hats to correct shock postion from lowering
Bump stops have been halved as per ground controls direction
Apex'i WS2 exhaust (not a fart cannon)
AEM Short ram (DIY mod to convert to cold air coming this weekend.)
50%F 35%R Window tint
Rota Slips with continental extreme contact dws tires
OEM ITR lip with paint matched side
Wingless Trunk
DDM Tuning 55watt 6000k HID's, Nokya Yellow bulbs in the OEM foglights.
Sony HU, Pioneer components in the front, stock rears, 2 Kicker Comp 10's with Kenwood KAC8104D amp.

Boost is the plan if I keep it. I have been looking at E36's however I am having a hard time selling this car, its my baby. I know FWD is not optimal and Honda's are well just that Honda's. My goal is to break the typical mold with this car and use the car for track, autocross, and daily driving duties. Ideally I am going to try to get 300whp, but my focus is going to be getting as much torque out of my little LS as I can. I have seen people actually achieve ~290wtq and around 270whp. This is what I would like to see with boost around 4k rpm.

I took these pictures with my new dslr which is a Sony A230L. I am learning with it so be easy on me. If you have any suggestions in that department feel free to lmk.

This is my turbo parts list as it is (copied and pasted from a Honderp forum I frequent).

Turbo Build list ROUGH DRAFT:

straight line specialties mini log mani fold and 3in down pipe - $745
cxracing fmic - $73 Shipped
cxracing radiator full length dual core - $150 I believe...
Spal fans - idk $ but since I am keeping ac I need STRONG fans. Gonna set them up to push.
Garrett T3/T04e 50 Trim - $700
SRE FMIC Piping- $150
Fast-Turbo Oil Lines - $39
Tial 38mm wastegate - $235
Tial 50mm BOV - $225
10an fittings and hose (ebay) - $46 shipped
Full 3inch stainless exhaust (ebay) - $140 shipped
Allowance for misc welding by Shawn Ramey and parts I might have missed - $500
Clock pod (quad pods) - $70 shipped
Autometer Sport Comp Boost gauge - $60 shipped (Summit)
AEM wideband - $200
LSD - idk which one so I can't say a cost.

Parts total = $3183 approximately

Ideally I can source some parts used, and cut cost. I'd like to get the turbo, wideband, boost gauge, BOV and wastegate all used. Maybe even the radiator. I know of one that might be available actually.

I am gonna let the tuner do the EMS and tuning in one go. My plan is to buy all my parts, keeping it as cheap as possible, then pull the motor have it sleeved, and the head freshened up. Once it is back, and re installed I will break it in, install the turbo junks, and trailer it to a tuner. I am gonna change my goal to this; I want 2 tunes. Something around 300whp to daily drive with, and autox, and one balls out tune for drag racing/shutting down haters. Essentially the second tune will be maxing out my setup. Also the fart cannon 3inch exhaust will have the muffler replaced with a black vibrant stealth muffler. I hate fart tubes.

It's an LS. Its really slow and really low. Let me know. I have some new pads on the way which will be installed this weekend as well as ATE superblue fbrake fluid.

I'll beat Justin to the punch. Do not turbo a non-turbo car. True story. That $3000 can buy 10 track days Smile

EDIT: Also, you are missing a lot of things from that rough build. Some sort of ECU tuning, a clutch, and fuel upgrades (fuel pump, injectors, fuel pressure regulator) being among the most major. Budget another $1000. See above.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

I know all of that, which is why it is a rough build. I would rather talk to the tuner and tell them my goals to make sure I get all the right parts. I am just getting my feet wet with boosting a car, but before I spend a dime on parts I will make sure I know exactly what I am buying. The ems, and dyno tuning would be done by a shop. As far as boosting a non turbo car I am looking into pulling the motor and having it strengthened up to handle boost. Benson sleeves, forged pistons and rods, arp head bolts etc.

It's one of those "I know that I can buy a fast car for the money I'd spend making this one fast, but I would rather build this one." I am far too attached to this car, despite its drawbacks.

I second that, take your budget...at least double that. thats what youll REALLY be spending. An engine build, tuning, EMS, wire tires/rims to handle the power, proper LSD, fuel pump/injectors/fpr, welding the oil pan, etc etc. I think youll have 7-8k in it at least. So take that 7-8k and see what you can get, I assume you can get 4 grand (at the bottom base) for your integra (unfortunately even REALLY nice integra LSs arent worth much anymore), plus 7k. 11K-12k for a car. That gets you a pretty nice s2000, or get an already built 240sx, RX8, hell get a small loan and your in an e46 M3, Evo, STi. All with wayyyy more room and will fit much better in classing.

I dont think you cant do it, we are just advising you its much better to try another way. Plus you said you wanted to autocross/road race? What kind of classing you think that puts you in? Terrible, youll be against cars with legit 50-60k in them, youll get pwned and frustrated (trust me I saw the writing on the wall when I was in HPDE with my gsx, classing would have me with those guys).

Dont worry, it can be fun, do it for yourself if you really want to, but I promise you its a bad investment and in 3 years youll go WTF. But I wont say I told you so then, because I have gone through that process and so have a lot of us.

PS- Looking forward if you keep up a good project thread Smile

I say do it. That is an awesome looking 'teg and refreshingly clean to boot - I can appreciate a clean, well sorted one when half the ones you see are piles. Plus, while I'd agree somewhat with the above caution, in instances like yours its been done 193049^78 times so you've got the communal knowledge and prior sorting to back you up.

One thing I'd do...if you can budget it in, it'd be cool to keep a quiet exhaust but add a cut-out for stealth mode.

Exactly. I have been researching this car for over two years now. I have watched my friends take shortcuts and blow apart their engines. This is a long term plan. Right now, I am gonna upgrade to my new pads (stoptech) and turn my rotors, replace my blox lca's with ones that properly position my sway bar (skunk2 or function7), and change the spring rates (550lbs int he front, 380 in the rear. Currently it is 380 in the front and 250 in the rear) to a setup that I like better. Summer time I want to get a gsr trans with a lsd, and a competition stage 2 clutch. All the while autocrossing, tracking and learning how to drive the car better faster and safer.

I know my rough draft is VERY rough and so is the budget, but it is sentimental attachment to this car that makes it hard to sell. I have yet to see one as clean as this. I am the second owner, got it with very low miles, and have literally done every modification myself. I learned what does and doesn't work and this is just my car. If it was a pile, It'd be on CL right now and I would take a loan on something better, but it is mint. I can't just sell it to someone who won't take care of it.

EDIT: The ONLY way I will be getting into a different car is if my dad takes this one. He loves it as much as I do and has told me several times that if I sell it he wants to buy it. So that would literally be the only case I could happily sell it and know it was gonna be in a good home.

I know you love it but I would agree with the other people with taking that money and getting alot better car since its just the little ls engine and you can get much more for your money. I like how clean your teg is though, most are beat to hell. How would that front wheel drive handle that much power anyway? Seems like it would have problems

With traction bars and decent rubber its not horrible.

And while the ls lacks "VTAKKKK" it is more torquey than the gsr and itr motors. Aka I don't have to rev to 9 grand to move.

I'm not going to hate on you about building up your car, as it's already been said at this point and I can relate to having a soft spot for a particular car. Personally, I also don't think you should hate on FWD so much either; a properly sorted out FWD can and will run circles around a RWD that was thrown together without a plan.

The one thing that I will absolutely tell you though, is to autoX/track your car as it sits today before you dump $$ into making it fast. Even being "slow", that car has limits on track that are far greater than your own. You need to learn those limits now before you start throwing more parts at it, so that you can appreciate and have a better understanding of how any additions affect the car.

Yep, that's the plan. I am just gonna keep learning the car and working on my driving. I will take some good pictures this weekend to update this with the work I am gonna be doing.

I hope to see some people, meet some more alumni and such at the atuox coming up on the 30th. Really excited, this will be my third one.

^ this along with everything else people have said about boosting a non-boosted car. If you want turbo, buy my STi. Its 300hp and a great daily driver.

Don't poo poo Integras, they're great cars, just get out on track and have fun with it. I had one that was setup very similarly to yours with Koni yellows/GC sleeves and springs. Just get a nice beefy rear anti-roll bar and the appropriate bracket support. It will be far more car than you'll be able to handle on track for a little while.

i couldn't agree more with the previous statements. i had a '98 Integra RS and actually put the exact same suspension set-up that Maeng had (literally...i bought them from Maeng) on my car and i LOVED it; I miss it too. 500# springs at all four corners and tuned the ride height and the Koni's. it was fantastic on the track.

FYI  Id still have it today if it werent for thieves in Maryland

two memorible moments from that teg:

1) HPDE2 with a guy in a white 350Z: I was hauling around Summit Point - Main Circuit with an instructor and approached a 350Z that was hauling as well.the only problem was that he was holding me up in the corners and then walked away from me in the straights. After a few laps of hugging his rear bumper in the corners I finally got the point-by. He approached me after the session and asked about my car. He was shocked to find out that it was a non-vtec motor on street tires (old school Azenis).

2) HPDE2 different session, same weekend: I, again, was hauling and working on maintaining my speed through the corners (specifically through T10). I was cooking my tires and kept going back and forth between another black Integra. He distanced himself (a littlemaybe 1-2 car lengths) during the front straight. After the session I came up to him and just chatted for a while. He, too, was shocked to find out that it was a non-vtec motor on street tires. He had a GS-R with R-Comps.

ItÔÇÖs your car; you do what you want. I love builds and seeing what people do with their cars, especially when youÔÇÖre driven by a Passion Car (copyright Peter Denbigh). I just know that I wish I spent more of my ÔÇÿmodÔÇÖ money in the past on safety equipment, track-time, and wear-itemsÔǪthose things add up quicklyÔǪ BTW if you love auto-xing you will absolutely love tracking your carÔǪyou wonÔÇÖt look backÔǪunless itÔÇÖs to check to see which faster cars you passed ;-)

Like I said boost is a long term goal, and I may never achieve it depending on sooo many factors. Short term I want to replace some items that are due, and up my spring rates. Maybe play with the audio setup a little bit more. I am gonna get out on the track soon. For now though, I am going to try to do every autocross that I can. Will have some new pictures for you guys this weekend! Thanks so much for the feedback. I really do appreciate what everyone is saying.

I stand corrected. I also had the ITR bar but a different subframe brace. It was a long time ago so I can't remember which kind but it definitely did not look like that.

I got this one cause the forum I frequent swears by it. They all kinda do the same thing though so can't really go wrong. I actually installed the brace/sway combo before I lowered it. My mistake was ordering poor ground control rates.

I also installed these (Goodridge stainless steel brake lines) cause I got them for free from a friend... They don't do much that I can notice but they look nice.

one thing i don't think was mentioned - how are you storing and protecting this car? i won't even try to get into Jay's debacles with his hondas but basically if anyone sees a nicely modified teg parked all by it's lonesome, especially with nice equipment on it, it's gone and your hard work will be for nothing.

it's a clean integra for sure but anyone who knows cars will be able to see it's boosted and has goodies on the suspension. i can distinctly recall some vandalized integras and civics around JMU from my days there. I'd hate to see that happen to you as well.

I have some things on it to protect it. If you are interested facebook me (Andrew Jones) or PM me and I will tell you. I just don't want to post up my measures publicly because you never know who is looking at the forums.

And thank you for reminding me, I need to go get a razor blade to take the stickers off the car. I have grown out of that phase.
