Taxes

Who else hates them?

I just went through a 2 week battle with the county regarding the property value of my car. They had it appraised at $24,400, after which I promptly wrote them a letter explaining that if I could get $24,400 for my car I would be at the dealership this afternoon trading it in. After 4 separate letters that I had to mail by snail mail (I know they purposely made this an annoying, hard process so they can keep my tax dollars) with proof of high mileage, numerous correspondence about irregularities and accusations that I made up the service records I sent them, they are finally sending me a check back for $59.21.

I'm not a dummy, I get the need for taxes. But when you really think about aside from state and federal income tax how EVERYTHING you already buy is taxed through sales tax, and other miscellaneous taxes (double, triple dipping, etc.), and then you have to pay another tax on your car and your home....it makes me really salty to see and hear about tax dollars getting wasted. Like the pointless medians they added in the middle of Dilworth in Charlotte, watching DOT guys sitting around while one guy operates machinery. Hearing about how one of our employees used to work for the state legislature and saw expensed dinner bills from the NC ABC commission that were $10,000+ tabs...expensive whiskey and booze expensed to the state, etc.

That's my rant for this morning. Who else gets salty about excessive taxation and subsequent wasting of our hard earned money?

I hear ya on property tax. What mostly pisses me off about it is having to pay it EVERY year. I have never been able to understand why you get taxed for having things that you already bought and paid taxes on.

income tax pisses me off enough, but yes, property tax and taxes on used goods are the most terrible of all. And more annoying that it applies to cars. I mean, I could buy a $500 car (theoretically, not that I've ever done THAT  ) and I have to pay a yearly minimum property tax on it, as well as sales tax? Come on. I could buy a $5000 TV or $20,000 violin, or $100,000 painting and not have to worry about any of that. How does that make sense? :dunno:

I feel your pain. I've had to fight with Fairfax County on at least 4 occassions about car tax.

Actually if the "assessed" vehicle value is equal to or less than $1000 dollars there is no personal property tax on it. So your $500 car will have no property taxes.

Except for safety inspections, new tags every few years, and emissions (all of which I consider taxes...) on top of the taxes you pay for the gas you put in it.

I guess my biggest rant is not that I have to pay taxes (even though it is BS that we're getting double/triple dipped quite frequently) it's that I feel like a lot of tax money is wasted on frivolous things. That same guy who works for us now who used to work for the state legislature was upset because he had to pay over $7500 in property taxes on his home and then he saw the NC ABC dinner bill for $10,000, itemized with $150 cognacs, $100 steaks, etc.

Paying $5000 a year for other people's kids to go school? Talk about a waste of money.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I don't know if this is sarcastic or not, but it is relatively true. Look to the 3rd world (ex... Afghanistan) if you want to see what having a generation of uneducated youth gets you.... zero intellectual capital which results in high unemployment, high crime rates and a much larger financial drag on society than the education would have cost. Not to say we shouldn't cut back on school spending, but it's elimination would cause huge issues. Maybe treat high school like a free-ride college scholarship? You do well and stay in school, we pay for you, otherwise you have to pay back the tax-payers when you turn 18 if you fail or flunk out?

We're writing them off as dependants and getting a child care tax rebate from the feds so the money has to come from somewhere. Tongue

you logic failure is that children would not be educated if government didnt force them to go to school, and that children are educated when government does force them to go to school.

i don't find the failure. you don't see many african nations rising to much power, do you? i know it's a collection of things, but i think you'd be crazy to not think lack of education [system] is one of them.

when did we get into FORCING kids to go to school? evan went there, not i.

i would imagine taxes that go toward education are much more responsible for paying teachers and buying shit to teach with than forcing children to attend.

it's straying from the point. we could discuss exactly how our education system operates until we're blue in the face... the fact is the money goes to our education system, which i firmly feel, while perhaps not doing so in the best way possible, provides for our nation's future.

I'd rather pay for someone else's kids to go to school than pay for a 150 year old bottle of bourbon at a fatcat political function.
