V10 TDI Touareg?

Saw one of these yesterday, I didn't even know such an engine exsisted! Confusedhock: Of course, it's rediculous, making only 310HP, but 553TQ, and I read that with a chip, torque is easily 650. Seems like a lot of engine for that SUV, and not practical for any other reasonably priced vehicle. I don't know what they're going for-- I guess if nothing else, it out-tows just about anything. It better though, with prices starting at 57k....

VW seems to be having an identity crisis. They seem to want to make vehicles well into the luxury bracket yet they already have Audi to accomplish that task. I can't help but to think its a monumental waste to have such a badass engine in such an expensive SUV. I guess its for people who own boats or whatever.

Hahaha, "the cost of badassness". I think you have coined a very effective new term.

Bah, what a waste of engine. If you want to tow you buy a new Dodge 5.9L diesel with 600lb/ft of torque, or the Silverado with 590 lb/ft.

yes. Seems like a V10 is overkill when other serious trucks get it done with an 8, some a 6! Maybe it's super smooth? But hey, at least they get unique points. I don't know of another non-american vehicle with that kind of torque. Towing capacity confuses me though, according to their site, it's 7716lbs. Great..... but.... the same # is listed for the V8 and V6. Is that like the max they're allowed to say it can tow or something by some silly government reg? 7716. Not 7720, lord no, you'll die. But even worse, void the warantee. Confusedhock:

review for the thing (aparently they're bringing less than 500 over here this year, so I guess I'm lucky to have seen one?):

towing capacity is a lot more than just torque, brakes, frame strength have a lot to do it.
I would imagine the frame of the car just cant take much over 7k (which isnt too shabby anyway)

If your towing much over 7000lbs it puts a lot of pressure on the tow hitch because the tongue weight gets really big. The reason that the big dogs can tow so much is because you can get a 5th wheel on them. That allows a much higher tongue weight because the weight is put directly over the axel and in the bed of the truck instead of hanging from a hitch on the back.
