We drove by a used car dealer "Toy Store" in PA this past weekend and a Porsche really jumped out at me. It looked just like the 930 poster I had on my wall as a kid. I contacted the dealer and he called it an 83 "Turbo". From my research, it should have all the suspension, brake and body parts from a Euro 930 but no actual turbo.
I'm really looking to get into something different, in about a year, maybe spring, if I get real itchy, and being more of a car guy than a Vette guy, I'd like to experience something completely different. It helps that the Porsche has jusssst enough back seat to suit the weekend duties. (soccer, tee-ball...)
I've starting reading a little bit, Motor Trend has a "buying guide" that provided some useful info about various changes through the years. And I saw another article about what to look for when buying. I'm looking for something a little more hands on though...
Just curious if you guys know someone that's owned one or talked to folks running them at the track. If I wanted to HPDE a couple times a year am I looking at huge dollars for consumables? What are my chances at having an 80K, 100K, 120K mile Porsche survive a few HPDEs? (Assumption: stays on track, pointed forward) Will an air-cooled car really survive a hot day in traffic? Any other words of wisdom, anecdotes, etc.

oh the temptation....
i've really really been thinking of this as my next car. i'm having a hard time getting over the fact that they are old cars by now and almost definitely need pricey maintenance. on the other hand, they are at the bottom of the depreciation curve and drive like only undiluted lightweight old cars can. i'd love to enjoy the 911 experience on my average income and maybe even enjoy the fact that it may appreciate as an asset.
my understanding is that the particular era your're considering (80's) are built like brick houses. i've heard over racers that have dropped a fan belt on track and still finished the race with the engine in fine condition due to the massive amount of oil that cools the engine. the CSI injection is basic and they are relatively simple but i don't know that i'd enjoy working on an engine thats jammed up under the parcel shelf. they have that "classic" in-slow-out-fast-or-die 911 handling too. i think by now almost all have non working A/C systems and some have rust despite being galvanized.
here's another thread to look over:

Wow..some seriously nice cars in there. I'll read the links later, thank you! I'm guessing the RSR is out of my price range.

I thought about whether I would miss an open cabin option, but I simply cannot bring myself to like the look of the targa. I stare at it wondering what the hell happened, how it can be the same car and so god-awful.

I am worried about how much I can do myself in terms of maintenance and any minor restoration that may need to be done. In the end, it's nuts and bolts like any other car but it does look like a real PIA.
And I like the era too for the same reasons, price, minimal technology, and by the mid to late 80's most mfr's had emissions junk worked out.
The driving will be the exact opposite of what I have now where exit throttle induced oversteer is the culprit. And seems like more fun than 911 oversteer, I have to say.
I'll have to look into the possible rust issue, though most seem very well cared for and not exposed to the elements very often.

same here. the problem is that the nuts and bolts are subject to the "porsche tax" hock:

yes - i love simple cars. i also cherished these things growing up and had the posters/matchbox cars/etc. they were always out of reach. the 964 and 993 are awesome too but they are a whole new level of ownership expense and i'll likely never have one.
i'm wary of the fact that i might back one of these into a tree if i cough too hard. as my first RWD car i should be looking at everything except antique 911's. at least you know your way around monstrously powerful RWD cars.

Fuck, I should not be looking at cars before I am ready to buy...Always been a fan of dark red with black wheels and I've never this car in that combo.
From the poking around I've been doing, the "turbo" cars (option M491) seem to get a hefty premium, outside my budget.

hurrrrt me. that is hot hot hot.
probably my favorite shade on a 911. looks about the same red as the 911 in my favorite poster
i believe the turbahs are a 4 speed. that's a bit awkward, not to mention the lag is legendary. love me some whale tail though.

I actually have that on my watch list. I'll spend a few weeks seeing what they go for.
4500/yr...hmmm...less than I've spent on motors in the past two years :vomit:

sounds to me like those are restoration costs not necessarily normal maintanence
I know a few guys who have tracked them and have their own shop. If you'd like to talk to an expert and/or have someone do a once over on a car before you buy it, PM me.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
I can't seem to find it online, but I was in Staunton, VA this weekend and there appears to be a place that sells older Porsches. They might be a good resource. Anyone else seen this in their travels to Staunton?
