If its in the driveway, it needs to be registered, and if its registered it needs to be insured. I wouldnt want to have a car sitting outside insured anyways. If you can garage it and its track only you can get specialty insurance for fairly cheap to cover against fire/theft/vandalism.

If you want cheap transport you cant beat a honda accord.

no in vienna where i live, you can uninsure the car and cover it with a car cover.

+1 on the Honda. A civic would work too if you aren't too concerned with room. I had one in high school and the first few years of college and it gave me 40k completely trouble free miles.

Another +1 for Honda. My friend has a 93 Civic that is cosmetically on its way out, but mechanically very solid. It's a 5-spd and fun enough to drive. She let me drive it from JMU to NoVA for a weekend (before I had a car at school) and it was a good size, the stick shift was pretty decent, and I managed 30 mpg. Win.

+11 on 90-93 Accord. We put 100k on our 5-spd one, now the coworker I sold it to is over 200k and still kicking. He also hit a deer with it and it barely shows. It has needed almost 0 maintenance in that time, it just got the minimum preventative things in my care, as well as 12-15k oil changes. And I think he recently replaced a fuel pump relay.

I don't know why you'd be given such a hard time, getting kicked off the parent's insurance is a right of passage!

*edit* hey, here's a cool little celica:

Uninsure it, unregister it and put it in the garage or driveway. BUTTTT!!!! Make sure to let your home insurance know, it will then be covered by them, they dont increase your rates at all for this.

Trust me, this is what I did for my car the 8 months it was in my garage. Saved me a shit ton of money, actually in terms of insurance it almost saved me enough to pay for my bottom end build.

Be sure to check with your homeowners insurance first though, like DJ said, and make sure, because not all policies cover vehicles. I've known of a couple companies/policies that will not pay for vehicles stored inside the garage. I've had a couple friends get screwed over because of that.

i got a few quotes on cars like a 94 civic and 92 miata just for kicks and its 1400/6mo for the civic full coverage and 1500/6mo full coverage for the miata. a 1998 2.5rs is 1700 full coverage. i plan on getting liability on this car, so that would make it half the cost.

right now im paying 1100/6mo under my parents insurance for full coverage. im still going to be paying more with the oldest car unless i do liability

1400 for 6/mo on a 94 civic? you'll pay its price in insurance every year!? i'd say buy a bicycle and bum rides to and from school.

yeah but what if i do liability? that cuts like half the cost. id rather sell my car and buy a 2.5rs , put liability on it and be happy with the 2.5rs

I would get quotes for liability only for those too. It doesn't cost much more to have collison, etc on older cars like that because they arent worth much. Unfortunately, the majority of those quotes is probably liability since your record isn't great.

If it's an older car its stupid to put it on anything but liability.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

How many companies have you called around to? I shop my car insurance on a yearly basis, often sooner. Rates change so frequently that you never know when you're getting the best prices. Right now Traveler's has killer rates.

Call Delisa Brown at (888) 878-8111 ext. 4531. It's an agency out in CA but she hooked me up with a sick deal when my last insurance company tried to give me a $1200/year rate increase because of an "at fault" accident that they were too lazy to thoroughly investigate (dude ran a red light, smashed my Lexus and I got blamed for it). They shop around a ton of companies.

how do you deal with a CA agency. what happens when someone hits you out here and they have to send an estimator or rep to see your car?

does anyone else think i should put liability on a 98-99 2.5 RS?

i disagree...collision coverage adds a significant amount depending on your driving record and what type of vehicle it is - it added 50% more for my 86 vw as well as 40% more for my 98 acura. It may not be much in value for older vehicles, but it sure will add more relative to how much it would cost without it. Again, this is just experience with my insurance companies, others may vary.

There are typically three types of coverage for auto insurance and i just wanted to make sure we're on the same page

liability - paying for others when the accident is your fault
comprehensive - paying for your stuff due to theft/vandalism or 'acts of nature'
collision - paying for your stuff when the accident is your fault

liability if you register a car in most states, including VA, this is required (unless you want to pay the DMV $500/yr for uninsured motorist status), this should also include uninsured motorists insurance coverage although it may be under a different coverage depending on your insurance company (check on this with them, it's important to have)

i would recommend comprehensive on anything above what you can't afford to lose, and it's not that much more in cost

i would recommend collision when you're driving a vehicle that has a high enough value that you wouldn't feel comfortable parting it out after a wreck or fixing it by other means

obviously if you get into an accident that isn't your fault you or your insurance company shouldn't have to pay a dime unless the person that hit you doesn't have insurance....then it becomes a fun litigation process

Hmm thats weird. It only added about 25% onto my rate when I had my 98 Civic. I guess its hard to compare things like that though like you said. It's apples to oranges for sure

I say go for the RS man. I think you're gonna have serious b00st withdrawal though Sad

Christ, you're insurance rates are insane. Rex and I combined pay 900 every 6 months, for full coverage on the Speed3, focus, and liablity on the truck. I thought that was high and was bitching about that. Geez.
