unnattended. just a friendly reminder -- i was at a texaco yesterday. swiped the card, placed the pump nozzle in the tank, yadda yadda nothing new/different. i took my time going around the car (i always do this little "inspection" walkaround thing when i pump, weird habit) and i pop the hood to check the oil.
*plap plap splooosshhh* "what the !@#$...??"
i look over and there is a lovely waterfall of texaco's finest just dumping out onto the ground. apparently the automatic shutoff decided to call in sick and thankfully i caught it before any large amount spilled out...although there was probably half a gallon on the ground. it's always a good time cleaning gas off your car in your nice work attire.

Doesn't the automatic shutoff only work when fuel hits the nozzle? If it didn't, that sweet scene in Point Break wouldn't be possible.

It's actually illegal to leave your car while pumping gas. We had a guy in a honda accord come inside one time while his car was pumping gas and it overflowed about 10 or 11 gallons. Gas was much cheaper then and it cost him like $90.

uhhh, i dunno, i would think you are at fault. if you don't intend for people to use auto-pump, don't offer it, or at least take care of your equipment to make sure it works properly.
i'm not sue-happy, but i would imagine that wouldn't be a tough one for a consumer to win.

99% of the time it did work properly.
I do realize that the US is probably the least common sense country in the world, which sucks, so yeah, i'm sure they could win a case. But really, all fuel stations have a sign that say do not leave it unattended, don't smoke,etc... yet no one seems to care about it.
Maybe every state should be like New Jersey (i think thats the one), and realize that no one is smart enough to pump gas without fucking up or driving off, and make all stations full service.

Yeah, but you do have a valid point about not offering autopump if you don't intend on customers using it. In all reality, I'm sure someone could sue over something like that if there was an major accident (fire, explosion) even if they didn't attend it, and there was a posted sign.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of people have a hard time even figuring out how to pump their gas in the first place.
Speaking of this, did anyone watch Modern Marvels the other day?
I think it was some Frenchy who designed a car that runs on air.
