I think these came out ok, but looking for some suggestions... I was hoping the sky wouldnt be so 'bland', maybe better luck another day on that.

First, nice work getting out there and making the effort.

The car looks really awesome and the first set of pics are really sharp but there seems to be a composition problem that's leading to the "ok" you're talking about. For the street pics, I know the car is what I'm supposed to be looking at but the composition makes me believe otherwise. The van is distracting, maybe if it was more from the front and the car took up more of the frame. The parking deck pics are better but again that big red concrete block is distracting. I think if you moved the car in the last pic to the big empty space on the left it would be perfect. As is, everything looks cluttered on the right side of the frame.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Yep.

Earlier in the day there was big fluffy white clouds out in the sky... I was hoping for some more of that but everything got hazy instead.

Maybe I'll head back over there later this week... Bring your Legacy, we can have a bling off

Do you use sequential number or folders? I don't know how Canon does it but there's no way these are only the 500th-ish pictures you've taken.

The Legacy is already in need of a wash. Detail it and we can take pics of it!

I think the canon reset the counter at 10,000. I'll detail it if you pay me Wink

Shit you're already past 10k? You definitely are a shutter release whore.

Get a chick there and I'll shoot anything. Smile

I still have to finish the photos up from last weekend. I'll probably meet up to hand off the CD sometime this weekend if you want to pass off your own.

i think your car placement is definitely good, just that some things are a bit cluttering/distracting (power lines, signs, van, etc)

the parking deck shots are more to my liking but i enjoy something different like street-side shots.

My favorite shot:

The shots on the street are good except for aforementioned van in one of them - I also found that red traffic signal distracting. Did you take any shallow depth of field shots on the street?

The lighting for the shots on the deck could have been better, and I find parking deck shots boring anyways.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

That's a good point. Taking a busy location and muting it with shallow DoF would make the car stand out a lot more.

Use that 50mm y0!

i think the lighting on the street shots are good. nice fluffy clouds to diffuse the harsh light and the blue really pops. nice contrast with the green and white too. i didnt notice the van or the streetlight until i looked for them.

the street pics look good, but yeah the garage pics look muted and flat. maybe because of the gray? or was it in the shadow of a tall building?

is it possible to get a shallow DOF shot of a large object with something as short as a 50mm? Even with f1.8 seems to me like you need more length when shooting a large object?

Does that car even have more than two wheels? That's one thing I notice - they all might as well be side shots. Seems like the car is floating, or photoshopped in when you can't see the depth

How do I take a picture of a car that shows more than 2 wheels at a time?

well i dont mean you have to see the wheel, but you set the angle in such a way that you can see one of the other wheels from under the car. So 3/4 view from the side. Take this picture down a little more, and a step or two to the right, and i'd be able to see the back side of the driver front wheel.

To me-- the street shots are way too cluttered. As others have said, try to isolate the car with a lower aperture. But- you can only do this if you are shooting the car head on or side on. If you shoot a 3/4 at like f/2 youre going to get the rear OOF. Also, by getting low and shooting up at the car, you eliminate a lot of the background and get mostly sky. The garage shots look good, but a little underexposed. As others have said, watch the backgrounds too. Overall-- good stuff though.

i'm wondering the same thing, we just got a Tamron 90mm lens in for our D70 at work and i love it (the DOF is incredible) but i don't think it would fit a car at any reasonable distance. i don't know though, i've only been taking "catalog" shots of nuts/bolts with it so far.
