...and gave it WINGS:
RS500 Wings actually. Complete with the gurneyflap :-).
I haven't been to the forum much lately. Looks like a lot has changed around here! Good job guys.
60 hour weeks haven't left much time for much other than work, but I have been able to put some time here and there into the XR. My goal is to have it "ready" by Hyperfest. By ready, I mean adding a few coats of black to the new bodywork, adding some suspension goodies, finishing the brakes (dual MC and two piece rotors), and shaking it down on some late night runs on some Harrisonburg backroads.
85xr.com has a new look too that details some of my projects. Check it out: www.85xr.com.

Very nice

To recap, this is the goal:
Mine will be a bit lower and with either the K1 (rain) or FN01RC (dry) wheels. And if time/budget allow, might throw some V1nylz on there ;-).
Front bumper and splitter are mounted, as are the new side arches. It looks great, even if they are still in primer-white-fiberglass.
Can't decide where/how to paint it. I have a 30 gal compressor and got a nice HVLP gun for Xmas, but I only have a 1 car garage in a townhome neighborhood. I have three options:
1. Pull it out in the driveway, build a showercurtan booth, and go to town,
2. Rent a paint booth somewhere in/around Harrisonburg, or
3. Finish the body work and take it to Maaco.
I've done nearly everything on this car (minus building the bottom end and building the cage) so it's sorta a "pride" thing to want to paint it myself too. Any suggestions from the BTDT crowd is appreciated!
Later!

dual mcs? seems like more work/chance for error than it's worth. really, what's the benefit?

All real racecars use dual mc's Much easier to get the proper front/rear balance, and easier to adjust (by leverage, instead of limiting line pressure).

Yeah, plus keep in mind that there are virtually NO aftermarket parts for the XR. It came with small front discs and rear drums. As such, to upgrade the brakes, I had to make customer brackets to fit universal calipers, then custom hats to fit universal rotors, and after all that's done, the stock MC is WAY off. So, by using dual MCs I get all the benifts RJ mentioned. Also, I have to independent systems, so if one should fail, I still have a 50% chance of being able to slow down.
Plus, it's a surprisingly simple mod to the stock brake box, so why not :dunno: ?

Did you primer over a NASA sticker Pete? I would spray the car outside or in someone else's garage simply because the paint dust will coat ever square inch of your garage.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Na, it just got the edges of my sander. It'll have to be removed anyhow, but those things are STICKY. So, I just decided to sand it off :-). It'll be cleaned up a bunch before painting. And fear not, many new NASA stickers will be applied :-).

I'm going to guess if you want it to look like the one in the picture, don't do the shower curtain job - unless you plan on doing a lot coats of paint and a lot of wet sanding to get the dust out.

Is that a rear diffuser as well? Pretty baller. I remembered that you said that the kit was wind tunnel tested. What were the numbers?
Two feet.

Nope, no rear diffuser. That'd be cool though. Maybe when I get some "free time".
With this kit the car actually increases its drag from .32 to .39 (oh nooos!). The rear wing produces 45# downforce @ 62mph. No published numbers that I can find at what it's like at 100+mph.
Interestingly the original wings were designed to increase aerodynamics. They actually provided lift at speed. Strange huh?

Why would Ford want lift? Would fuel economy be increased?
Two feet.
Andy Wrote:Why would Ford want lift? Would fuel economy be increased? that's really pretty common with a lot of manufacturers, most lip spoilers and other aero looking things are really there to reduce drag. And sometimes they end up providing a little lift.
Anyway, Pete, looks crazy. I'm sure it'll be badass when you're done, I'd expect nothing less.
Don't real wings provide downforce as an power? ie, if it's 45# at 62, then it's probably ~4x that at 124! :dunno:

woohooooo, I've been waiting to see this thread pop up.
My vote is a showercurtain/PVC paintbooth in the driveway. Despite Derek's comment, if you prep it right and get the flow right on your gun, a little bit of TLC, some buffing, and a good wax will make it pop better than than the pic you've got of the real RS. Besides, even if the paint isn't perfect when you finish, it's a track car designed to get scratched up by rocks and shit, so no reason to dump money into a $5000 paint job when $200 or less will get your 95% there.
I've been thinking about the homemade paintbooth for a while and if you set it up with a top and bottom, put in a hole for a home air filter or two, and a couple box fans to suck air through the whole room, you won't have to worry about dust and you'll get airflow like a real shop's paint booth (just not as much).
Interesting. Group Paint-off? I'll create a separate thread.
