Drag race weekend

I don't have a camera, but just thought I'd share a couple pictures from some 1/8 mile drag racing i went to watch this weekend. The guy I know drives that Lumina shell - it's got a 631ci big block chevy in it with some kind of two stage fogger/plate nitrous system (400 shots).

They compete in Mean 16 - which basically narrows down the field in qualifying to 16 cars by bumping the times down..then it's heads up pairings. If you make it to the 16, you're in the money. The lumina runs about a 4.5s 1/8th @ 155mph or so. They actually have a small motor compared to some of the cars in the field - which have up to 800+ motors. The two cars in the background are a stingray shell - not sure about the motor in that, but he does bracket racing and is fast enough he could compete in the Mean16 if he wanted. Behind that is a bracket C4 vette that is also someone I know.

The Lumina made it to the 16, but was knocked out in the first round. Made 500$. The cars that win usually run 4.2s/4.3s. @ 170+ These guys I know win sometimes, but more by driving and getting them on the tree, than by brute force speed.

Also - an MM Donkey? heh. It's the mascot for the track, this was painted on the side of one of their vans.

hell yeah it is. You can really see the difference 2 or 3 tenths makes too. The 4.2/3 cars look like they are blowing away the 4.4/5 cars

Very cool! Those are some quick cars your buddies are running. Live by the tree...die by the tree. One of the things I like about drag racing is the sudden death nature of each round.

Do they ever run 1/4 mile? What kind of times if they do?

I am getting out to my first NHRA event this weekend. I just can't wait to see, feel and hear 8000hp live.

They don't ever run 1/4 mile times, because all the 1/4 mile tracks are too far away from where we're from. They'd run high 6's low 7's in the 1/4 though by using an ET estimator. I think they're pushing around 1600 - 2000 hp on the juice.

My tip to you is to take earplugs. I imagine they'll be running other stuff between rounds, and some of the stuff is retarded loud. Any of the blown motors feel like they're going to bust your eardrums.
