Who is the crazy one?

Back story: I bought two Sparco Evos last year. I installed the driver's side with a used 5-point belt earlier this year, but haven't had the coin to do the passenger's side until now.

Yesterday's story: I go to OG, grab the Sparco mount, and then tell him I need another harness. The plan is to move my older 5-point to the passenger side and install whatever I buy for myself (yeah, I'm so selfish). Having been in a student's car with a 6-point, I'm intrigued by them... I ask how much extra they are over a 5-point ($5), and I'm settled. UNTIL the salesmen (a regular there, I know he knows his stuff, but maybe it was a bad day?) tells me that most clubs require equal safety equipment. In my mind, a 5-point is just as safe as a 6-point... just maybe a little less comfortable. Hell, even if it is *slightly* less safe, it's still in the freaking same ballpark... not like a 3-point v. 6-point. I make my case, but he won't have it. Maybe he knows something that I don't? He was really getting pretty in to it at this point. I explain to him that I'm the instructor so it's not like I'll have a passenger that hops in and isn't ok with the "unequal" safety. Shit, who in the world would even check that both belts are 5-point? Christ. Anyway, I ended up leaving with another 5-point.

Who is the crazy one? Me for bothering to write this up?

He's right in that most clubs require equal equipment, but wrong in that a 5 point isnt equivalent to the 6 point. Having a harness/seats on both sides IS equal safety equipment.

Right, so he was wrong (I know that equal equipment is required/preferred). Whatever, at least I don't have to drill another hole for a 6-point Tongue

NASA does not require EQUAL safety equipment. This is a misinterpretation of their rules, they require the passenger to MEET the requirements for the driver, the driver can have a $4,000 full custom lajoie seat and 7pt belts and the passenger can have a stock POS seat w/ a 3pt belt and still be within the rules. Not sure what belts you got but with my Sparco/Sabelt belts the 'sub' belt can easily be switched out, the cam lock only has 5 points and the sub belts either have 1 (5pt) ,2 (6pt) or 3 (7pt) straps attached to them, the 2pt 'sub' was only $35 and comes in either T or V shapes (V being easier on the 'boys').

So basically he's an idiot for trying to tell you what the rules are and you are an idiot for not calling him and and getting what you actually wanted oh and for posting this Smile.

Was this bald head Bryan or Azian Steve? Bryan is pretty crazed about equal safety gear and pushes the six point pull downs like nobodys' business. Whichever harnesses you bought, please tell me you bought the pull ups.

Adjustability. In my car and other small cars I've sat it, I have to get out of the car inorder to adjust pulldown lap belts.

gottcha, yea that's the only difference in pull up/down is the size of the cockpit. 'Small' cars should use pull up. I thought you were going to try and say one was safer than the other.

I'm getting 6 pts just for comfort reasons, but I think it is absurd that this guy was trying to convince you that you'd be reprimanded at an event for having a 5 pt in the passenger side.
1) At this point, you having a passenger is optional. You're an instructor and you'd be providing your rider with plenty of safety. Hell, there's a lot of instructors that don't even have a passenger seat.
2) The safety difference between a 5 pt and 6 pt is marginal, in my opinion, and the biggest difference would be the comfort levels during a sudden stop.

Take it back and get the 6 pt for you. Don't listen to him bickering and tell him if he doesn't like it, you'll take your business elsewhere.

Well, the safety difference is probably marginal... the comfort of your package after the incident isnt :lol:

I impacted a tire wall head on, and then landed on top of it with a 5 point belt and no discomfort with my boys.

i guess i just don't know the pros/cons of each. if pull up have no cons, i might as well get those, no?
