errr.... clutch... errr... already

So, on the test drive, I thought it slotted "smoothly" from second to third. I asked the owner if that was slipping. "Of course not. The RPMs just got up there that fast." I guess I should've wiped that big sMile off my face. Either way, the clutch slips when I am accelerating hard in second and drop it into third. I expected a chirp, or at least a lurch. I got neither. It doesn't slip while in gear though. How urgent is it to change it?

I found an OEM clutch kit for $305. Can I put it in myself (I have a garage now)? How hard is it to replace a clutch in an E36? Should I just pony up and pay a shop like $600 to do it? (on the low end, I'm guessing)

If you have a proper toolset including a torque wrench and a friend, you should be alright doing it yourself. As long as you torque down the flywheel properly, you should be alright. Those directions didn't look any different than doing any other F/R setup.

you are expecting to chirp a E36 M3 in third gear? Me thinks you have a little high expectations. If its not slipping while in gear then it's not 'urgent', maybe you just need to adjust it?

How many miles are on it?

Are you sure its not just the clutch delay valve thing doing its job?

i've read that E39 M5's have the same "issue"...can't chirp gears.

in those cars though it has to do with the heavy dual mass flywheel in some cases

It's definitely not slipping while in gear. It has 92k on it though. I haven't gotten stuck on a steep hill. I just expected that when my foot comes off the clutch, it's engaged... whether it's stalling or chirping.

You can 'fix' that... or just live with it.

RJ... you hit the nail on the head I think.

Clutch Delay Valve (CDV): A dogshit piece of owner scaring hardware that slips the clutch to try to save the transmission on hard shifts. Apparently, you can feel it more on 1-2, and 2-3 shifts under hard load (like going up hills) and it just slips the clutch rather allowing it to just grab.

Quote:The Clutch Delay Valve (CDV) is a one-way restrictor installed by the factory between the clutch slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder, as shown in Figure 1. It "delays" the engagement of the clutch, much like old record players used a damped tone-arm to gently lower the needle onto the surface of a record.

Because of this valve, no matter how quickly you lift your foot off the clutch pedal, the clutch engages the flywheel at a constant (slow) rate. In theory, it can save the driveline from shock, were an inexperienced (or immature) driver to dump the clutch at high RPM. But in practice, all it does is prematurely wear out the clutch and turn experienced drivers into people who, despite 20 years of practice, cannot shift gears smoothly. During parallel parking maneuvers, the delay can be infuriating, causing constant clutch slippage. And during hard acceleration, the large amount of clutch slippage can greatly shorten the life of your clutch. During normal, sedate driving, the shift from first into second gear is often jerky.

IS300's have the same thing, people use some cheap $6 part from NAPA to disable it....probably the same thing for bimmers.

As long as it will hold all the engines power while the car is floored in 3rd or 4th gear, don't worry about it. IDK what a CDV feels like but it sounds like thats what you are experiencing.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Well, plane tickets aside, if you or anyone else in MM wants to visit SF, my place is ginormous. Anyone has a free place to stay for sure.

Lol I love people saying they got too much traction or too little torque, my friend said he could barely chirp nto third, got in the car and did a 2/3 shift almost burning his tires halfway through third....poor tranny.
