I'm selling my A4 after 2 good years of ownership. this is my attempt at kind of putting this "out there" a little early....i will not be able to let go of the car for about another month or two until things with home-buying have calmed down a bit.
it's been in my family since it was delivered new and i've put approximately 20k miles on it since i've had it, almost entirely highway. in that time i've put forth a ton of effort and money to get the car perfect. i am being as honest as possible here and will try to include everything i can think of. it's pretty hard for me to keep this thing under a page long...
i'm selling the car because:
- jen and i are looking into getting a home and i am going to move downmarket a little to put some more money towards that purchase
- i don't have the facilities, tools, or wrenching talent to work on the car myself, which is something that makes cars like this affordable to own
- i'd like to move to RWD if possible
specs/options
- B5 chassis, melange metallic paint, beige interior with aluminum accents
- approx. 85k miles
- Quattro IV AWD system with torsen 50/50 center diff
- 1.8L turbo engine
- 5 speed manual
- factory sport package (16x7 sport wheels, sport springs/dampers that increase handling and lower the car by 20mm over stock, 3 spoke sport steering wheel)
- factory built-in hands free phone
- here's a listing of all the standard features and what not:

modifications
- GIAC engine software, bumps stock power/torque from 150/150 to 190/230 and increases highway gas milage
- ECS Tuning A8 320mm front rotor upgrade. Zimmerman OEM rotors with audi TT caliper carriers
- Bailey Motorsports bypass valve in "stealth" black finish
- FK badgeless grille
- Isspro 0-30 psi boost gauge with color matched back lighting and a no-buzz fitting
- modified fog light relay to turn on fogs without the headlights or w/high beams
- Ferodo DS2500 street/track front pads
recent service
all major service has been within the past year or so:
- clutch, TOB, resurfaced flywheel
- timing belt, water pump, tensioner
- aligned to factory specs
- OEM fuel filter
- Avon M550 tires
- new long block (and associated hardware, fluids, etc.....approx. 70k on new block). many of you are aware of this ordeal and it essentially stems from me screwing up the car by doing a poorly executed/planned engine flush. i felt the car might have been suffering from low oil pressure at idle due to some gunk on the oil pump screen. should have just cleaned the screen....
spare parts
- AEB cylinder head, 85k miles. these are worth alot of money to mkIV VW guys and audi guys alike.
- stock front caliper carriers
- OEM trans drain plug socket
- OEM Mann oil filter or two
- OEM power steering fluid ($$)
- stock grille
what it needs
at the moment, nothing. in about a year or so i would recommend:
- front control arms (a little squeeky when its real cold out or first thing in the morning. they aren't gonna fall off the car or anything, just a nag)
- trans fluid change
- rear diff fluid change
- brake fluid flush
- because i didn't know where else to put this...has a small bump on the pass. door where some sea-donkey hit me with her bumper. the trim peice was replaced but almost all the paint buffed out except for a spot or two.
Ultimately this is a very hard thing for me to do. i have loved this car and have alot of sentiment in it...i took my wife to the prom in it when we were just dating in high school, spent some great summer vacation nights in college driving it on the VA parkway and had some great road trips. i have always treated it with care in both my driving habits and maintainance. i have literally a binder full of every reciept for every major service and modification the car has seen, including original audi brochures and purchase correspondance. up until my ownership it was garaged year round. it is always washed and waxed regularly, driven gently upon warmup and cooldown, never launched, proper shifting, etc. oil changed regularly at 3-4k mile intervals. it was only autocrossed once, if you can call it that -- i did 2 or 3 fun runs at the end of the day at a local driving school i was helping at before they cleaned up the course for the night.
for anyone looking for a fun car to build up, this is the one to have. no-option 99.5 A4's are pretty rare birds and this is essentially the lightest B5 chassis audi you can get (according to audi, dry weight is about 3150 lbs.) while also giving you the older AEB motor (bigger ports, stouter internals and easier to tune drive-by-cable) in the updated 2000+ body (1 peice headlights, updated dash, side markers, tails). the stock 1.8T bottom end will hold about 350 horsepower, and once upgraded the sky is the limit. the drivetrains in these cars are notoriously bombproof (might want to upgrade that clutch though
) and the frames are very, very strong. with some upgraded Meyle control arms the suspension will also be set for years and years while providing the adjustability and plushness that multi-link setups enjoy. in recent years the B5 chassis cars have enjoyed a huge blow-up in aftermarket support in all areas.
for someone looking at a competent all-weather DD, this car would also be fine. driver/pass. front airbags, driver/pass. side airbags, ABS, ESP (traction control via individual-wheel braking below 25mph) and even a factory supplied first aid kit makes this a very safe automobile. i've maxed out at about 32 mpg on the highway at 70 mph, and cruising is relaxed and quiet even with the sport suspension. the controls are straighforward and with a light clutch and highly adjustable ergonomics, sitting in traffic or the open road will leave you equally comfortable. insurance is very cheap and theft is not nearly as bad as the more glamorous S4's or many other imports.
after all that i know you are turning your couches and matresses upside down to find every dollar you own  in all seriousness though, i will be more than happy to deliver this car to VA as my family and friends are there. if you require additional specs, pictures, anything at all...just ask....i'll answer anything as honestly as possible. most people here will vouch for me that i'm not too bad to work with 8)
i'm asking $8,500 which i feel is in line with the general trend in pricing with these cars, and is definitely fair considering the condition, documentation and spare parts. however, i will consider offers so don't be shy.
