requesting info on 94 Talon Tsi?

What do people know about these cars besides the fact that they are 4WD turbo cars.
I found one for sale that is untouched by bing and bling, and has been well taken care of. It has a whopping 172,000 miles.
Oil changes have been the regular every 3000 miles, and the transmission apparently seems solid.
Possibly good buy for $1700.00?

Tell me what ya know?
Thanks

AFAIK, those things are fairly strong. Here are my ideas:

1. I would never pay 1700 for a car with 175k on it.
2. I would not buy a DSM for 1700 with 175k on it.
3. DSMs are not the most reliable cars in the world.. especially with 175k
(look who's talking)
4. You're going to have to do a lot of minor mainenance if it hasn't all been done.
That means lots of small trips to trash auto.
5. Turbos need to be rebuilt at 125-150k. If it hasn't been rebuilt, don't expect
to drive it hard for long without the turbo going.

Conclusion. It seems like A LOT of money for a car with that many miles but it is a 94 and it is slightly above KBB. You could get what you pay for it at that price considering it is a TSi AWD. I would not buy it expecting reliable daily transport. The fact is... that car has had an above average number of miles put on it and you should know a VERY detailed history before paying 1700 for a car whos engine could cost more than that, and whos turbo could cost half.

PS. I love the TSi AWDs. They were 2nd inline behind TII for reasonably priced sports cars. They are lots of fun and for that, you might be willing to drop a couple grand. My advice is buy it if you have enough cash saved up for a new motor and turbo.

170k is a LOT of miles. I'd offer 1250 if you really dig the car and the turbo has been rebuilt. However, based on the number of DSM folk who upgrade turbos though, you could prolly find one in good shape for $50 though.

I guess I will run away from the possibility of having a cheap car with boost Cry

I will continue my search for a good deal on a CRX Si.

I owned one. It was fun, fast, powerful, comfortable. It was NOT reliable. 172,000 doesn't really scare me much, just make sure you have at least double the cost of the car.

Undecided

Sad news, I know. Of course, you could always give ME the number. Wink

My car was cheap w/ boost but the engine only has less than 40k on it now. Don't discount it entirely, go visit it... but as CapHen said, be sure to have at LEAST double the cost of the car for maintenance. Engines aren't cheap. I definitely wouldn't have bought a boosted RX7 if I didn't have the money for a new engine...

I've said it 20 times. Get a hatch, swap a motor, and you have all 3. I really can't think of any other car that this applies to.

Yeah, takes about 4 hours if you really know what you're doing. Maybe an entire weekend if you don't.

I also have the weakest Integra motor there is. Throw in a GS-R or IT-R motor and you'll agree it's fast. With a completely stock motor you'll run mid to low 13s, fast enough to smoke a Supra Turbo. You're bolt-ons away from 12s, which is fast enough to smoke a Lamborghini Diablo in a 1/4. And that (the 1/4) isn't even what these cars are best at!

Just so you know, there's a 1991 TSI AWD with an auto tranny in the trader for a Grand in Winchester.

The tranny has issues according to the ad, but maybe you could score it for half that, if you pushed. Smile

Also- Found a single cam 240, needs head gasket and tlc...500 bucks.
