This doesn't seem like a new idea to me

Big whoop, this doesn't sound drastically different from water injection. And I'm sure it can triple the power of a N/A 2.4L engine, there's plenty of ricers out there that are already doing that. Direct injection + boost? WOW you're a genius.

That's frustrating. Think how many resources went in to reinventing the wheel.

I mean, sure, it needs to be developed, it's a logical step. I'm guessing it's just that the writer of the article was working hard to make it sound like a breakthrough for extra sensationalism points.

Plus I'm sure they didn't really understand what they were being told. Phrases like "Turning on a car's turbocharger" send up red flags.

Heh. You have to understand we're some of the few, the proud who actually understands how a car works. For most people, a car is the most sophisticated thing they'll ever come in contact with directly. And they're fucking clueless. I've had people tell me, and seen in ebay adds that the overdrive button turns on the turbo, or is some other form of magic power adder, etc. I think I'm going to start a thread.

My favorite part of the article:

Dumb Ass Article Wrote:Both turbocharging and direct injection are preëxisting technologies, and neither looks particularly impressive. Indeed, used separately, they would lead to only marginal improvements in the performance of an internal-combustion engine.

Except for that, you know, there are a whole bunch of DI/Turbo engines out there, because direct injection and turbocharging go together like peanut butter and jelly and any first year engineering grad student can see that as plain as the nose on his face. Not to mention this little thing called a Diesel engine, many of which use turbocharging but are, by virtue of being diesels, directly injected. ZOMG!1111!!!Hyrbird!100110
