I'm going to paint my Kosei K1. They were only available in white so that has to go.
I'm going to use TAL aircraft stripper. That's what I assume you guys have done.
Do you guys have any tips for me to help the paint adhere better to the wheels? When I painted my old set of wheels, some of the paint started to flake off and look poopy.
Two feet.
Dont strip them, you will NEVER get the paint off of those K1's. They're powdercoated and have to be media blasted.
That said... if you just scuff them with medium grit sandpaper (the foam blocks found at home depot work great) and paint, they will look fine

Dont paint them "Grabber Green" - I call dibs on that color!!

Whatever color that is, you can have it. It sounds ugly.

It's so you can see me even more in the rearview when i'm about to roll you..

Talstrip and a big pressurewasher do a really good job. I pulled the chrome off of my old TT wheels with that method.

when i painted my white kosei's, evan told me to use naval jelly to etch the surface, sand it down a bit and then i primed it and put on two coast of wheel paint, then two coats of clearcoat. it looked pretty good. then i changed the brozne kosei's to gunmetal by using some paint stripper i got at lowes and a wire brush. then i primed it and painted and clearcoated it. i dont think the finish looks nearly as good as the bronze did, but it was dark and i just didnt wanna have to wash the wheels when they got brake dust on them, so i didnt care too much

So did the naval jelly take some of the powdercoat off or did it just rough up the surface?
Two feet.
it didnt take the powdercoat off, and if it etched the surface, it was hardly noticeable. it did pull the brake dust and grime and shit off. wear gloves.

All you need to do is scuff the surface up, the paint will stick best to the old paint. I did this on my ATS wheels - one set I tried to strip and failed miserably, and they came out looking like absolute shit. The other set I just spent about 10 min per wheel scuffing the surface up and painting, and they came out great.
Andy - let me know if you need any Universal GoldÔäó

the naval jelly is for pulling the brake dust residue off, and it works really well since most brake pads are iron based.
as said before, dont use stripper. i tried that once and it looks like shit.
scuff the wheels, but dont use medium grit use a finer grit. a medium grit will make the final finish look duller.
if the wheels are old and the paint is faded you probably dont need to scuff much at all. if the wheels are new and the paint is shiny and slippery then the paint wont stick to them (i have a set that the paint comes off when i spray water on them due to this). your final result after scuffing should be a dull appearance, you shouldnt realy see scuff marks
finish with duplicolor wheel clear coat.
i usually do 3 coats color, 2 coats clear
post-it notes work well for masking off your tires.

The wheels are new unfortunately so it sucks that I have to scuff up a set of brand new wheels. Oh well.
I was going to do it this weekend but with the coldsnap, I'm just going to work on the sound deadening.
Two feet.
