Gran Turismo 5: Pay as you play!?

I lost interest in the series after GT2, but this nailed it for me, and probably for others too.

"A quick calculation shows that to purchase all 750 cars and 50 tracks would cost an astonishing $637, more than the price of the console itself!"

And the argument that they'll make it this way to cover production costs sounds like BS. Invest millions of dollars to develop an advanced gaming system, then charge people to use the games for it, because it is so advanced?

That's fucking retarded. I can see that flopping so fast. First of all, racing games can only really get so "realistic". The racing games I've played on the 360 have had plenty of graphics quality to me... when you're focusing on actually racing, you're not going to pay attention to whether or not that spectator you passed before the tunnel was picking his nose or not. I think that is the dumbest shit idea ever, to charge people to essentially unlock better tracks / cars when in EVERY other game within every other series (including the one that is proposing this) you could do so by just being good at the game.

You can in no way compare a racing game to a MMORPG, and anyone stupid enough to spend money to get a different car or track should instead delve themselves into WoW and waste their lives away like I used to instead. You'd probably have a more meaningful gaming experience paying 12.95 a month to slay dragons than .45 to get a Zonda.

So you have to swipe your credit card on the console? The idea is indeed ludicrous.

looks like this game will go along with FF XI - not going to pay to play.

paying for playing a game like that just distances me more from video gaming...Sad

You are right on the money, I lost interest in Gran Turismo after GT2. I think that was the height of the series for me.

The pay as you play model can work in some instances such as WoW and Everquest but I think you have to be really careful to get it right. Shipping a game like GT in a basically crippled form then making people pay for it is not the way to do it. If they shipped the game with all of the tracks, then released an expansion pack 6 months or a year later with some new tracks and cars and maybe paint schemes for like $5 or $10 that might be more reasonable.

Even without this asinine pricing scheme I wouldn't have been very interested in GT5 anyway. I really don't care that I can choose from 750 different 3d models that all have the same basically crappy physics model. Sure, I've never driven a Pagani Zonda but I've driven some of the cars in real life and in GT they feel totally unrealistic. I'd rather have them do 10-20 cars "right" than 700 cars poorly. Forza pretty much blew GT out of the water on its first iteration and I imagine Forza 2 will widen the gap, even if GT were priced reasonably.

Supposedly GT:HD isn't even really GT5. It's just GT4 in HD resolution, where you have to pay to get the cars and tracks. Brilliant! This sounds almost too stupid to be true. The game is set to come out in the second quarter of 2007 so that's a lot of time for Polyphony Digital to get hate mail so maybe by launch time they will have changed their mind.

It even comes complete with a Factory Five Driver named Whiteside to dump you in a corner, and nearly run over 3 Grid workers.

I always thought they should make you pay when you tear up the car on GT games.
